Well I got my first SkS yesterday, looks great but its gonna take some cleaning! Lol. Anyway it is a 1950 and all matching, my question is what the accessories are that came with it. I think there is a sling and ammo pouches but what ois the silver container and black tube looking thing?

Thanks!!

Hm oh right there was a bore brush to but no cleaning rod

The cleaning rod is just under the barrel, and can be removed by folding the bayonet out half way.

The cleaning kit should include a bore brush, jag, and IIRC a punch of some sort. The cap of the cleaning kit with a hole through it fits over the muzzle to guide the cleaning rod (which could otherwise damage the crown, hurting accuracy). If shooting milsurp (corrosive) ammo, be sure to clean the rifle thoroughly each time you use it, beginning with windex or water soaked patches to remove all of the residual salts before coating with oil. And don't forget to be thorough with the gas tube, bolt and receiver!

Good Luck!

Frank

well, i may try that first, then the varsol method, im afrid brake cleaner might harm the blueing. although I see many many people have used the brake cleaner. cleaning the stock is what im most worreid about.

You can put it in the oven at around 150-170F. It sweats the cosmoline out. Kinda smells so crack a window or two, but this method works pretty well. I have used a warm rag and dish soap but that leaves the stock slightly greasy still. There is a sticky about cosmoline removal at the top of this thread.

I had great results with using someone else's oven :)

i wouldnt dare put it in the oven, the wife just bought it last month. haha..i will probably try the hairdryer method first, then if that fails. i'll put it outside in the sun a few times.

the only simple green i could find was the "car wash" and "paint prepping" i wasnt so i stuck with varsol and brake cleaner, they seem to work well, im not worried about the smell.

I got my first SKS a few weeks ago, and had the best results with water. I was able to clean pretty much everything with the water. I put the wood parts in the oven (wrapped in tinfoil to catch drips) at 170 and it all cleaned up very nicely just wiping it off every 15 minutes or so.

You definitely want to disassemble the bolt and clean it very well. Mine was quite gunked up with cosmo. The pin wouldn't move freely until I got in there with solvent and a Q-Tip.

Have fun with the gun, mine already has several hundred rounds through it. :)

My way is WD-40 followed by glass cleaner. It cuts the grease quite well, getting it nice and clean, then the glass cleaner removes the last of the WD-40 so it wont be oily and smell like WD-40 for 2 weeks. Comes out spotless every time with little effort. It wont harm the finish on the stock or metal. Brakleen wont hurt the bluing, but it will look like you just destroyed it right after you wipe it away, a coat of oil restores its shine. If there are any dried bits of cosmo left, use steel wool and a little extra WD-40, it comes right off without leaving a mark.
