We have a small group and are thinking about applying to one of these WMU-s but non of us has any experience hunting up there.
There must be a catch why the guaranteed group size is so small.
Looking at the maps, both WMU 18A and 18B seem to have a few roads but there is only one main road going up North to the border of WMU 25. Are these areas accessible by van? We do have a couple of ATV-s but no trucks.
We would very much appreciate some helpful hints regarding vehicle access to these areas.
Thank you so much in advance.

18a has good roads lots of bears and wolves ,very close to an indian reserve which means very few moose near the roads. If you were to portage or fly in and getaway from the easy acess it might be a different story. While we were hunting there we met up with a native guy who told us there was lots of moose in the area and then said he had shot 47 since June. I would not choose 18a as my first choice.
Regards

Thank you for the information.
Are you referring to the Nakina area by Hwy #584 or the other main road going to WMU 18A by Lake Nipigon?

all those areas have limited access and heavy hunting presure before the hunt . the costs associated with hunting there and actually getting into good access points are limited. one hint a lot of those fresh cuts you see in aerials and road access is closed when there is logging going on and they spray chemicals after the logging that does keep the game away the first year.you actually have to move deep into bush before you'll see sign.

Poor access. Best bet is hunting the rivers, but that can be a lot of work, especially if you shoot a moose and it heads straight into the boreal.

A friend's group went to 25 a few years ago. There is only 1 short access road and there was 6 other groups camping on it.

What doubleman said is right. 18A does have lots of roads in the Nakina area to hunt from, 18B has very little road access. 18A has gone down hill in the last few years, around Nakina anyways. In the late 90's early 2000's it was great but the native harvest is really high and the last time i was there about 3 years ago the wolf and bear tracks were everywhere. There wasn't any new logging going on at that time and the old cuts were getting so grown up you couldn't see very well. There was some moose left but they were skittish and would never come out in the daytime that we saw. 18A has a lot of outfitters and I think the low tag numbers keeps them in business by promoting people to come the area.

Anyone hunt 18b blackpowder for moose? Is bear blackpowder only during moose blackpowder too? My father inlaw has us heading there this fall. Thanks
