So I'm buying a rifle soon and it seems to be between the SVT-40 or the M14 from Norinco. To tip the scales I was thinking you Gun Nutz could provide some personal experience with either guns, and hey, if someone owns both and wants to weigh in even better! From what I've read

Norinco- Possible issues? More expensive than the svt to shoot and to buy, also the new norinco stocks look a bit meh IMO. BUT as people here seem to point out its a whole lot of rifle for a good price.

Tokarev SVT-40- Gorgeous gun(for a milsurp fan) Cheap to shoot and buy.

But Ive never shot either of these, thats where you folks come in. The SVT seems to me to be the more reliable shooter as well from what ive read on these forums

Your thoughts?

Can't go wrong with either one, you seem to be leaning towards the SVT in terms of cost already so why not get that? I had one for a bit and it's a nice solid rifle, pretty big though. Haven't shot the M14 but your right the stock did feel a little meh to me. But at the same time it's brand new and looks badass, plus you can throw a scope on it like some guys do.

@ potshot Hell, im sure thats whats gonna happen. Just got my PAL and I can already feel the icy grip of gun addiction pulling on my wallet....slippery slope here I come.

hahah dacton you pretty much pointed out why im on the fence right now. its win win anyways but what to do sigh

thanks for your input lads

I wouldn't consider the SVT to be more of a reliable shooter than a M14s / M305. The later will be a new rifle and will function as such. Both are accurate with iron sights. The SVT is a great gun, long and very unique looking, but you may have to fiddle with the gas setting to get it to function properly. Also, the M14s ammo is easier to find in AB than the 7.62x54R that the SVT needs. Though places like Frontier Firearms does have great deals on surplus russian ammo for the SVT. If you get a SVT make sure you don't get one with that bastardized cut mag.

thanks North, that was really informative. i think im gonna end up getting ammo shipped to me but ive yet to really look into it, I dont know of anywhere in Calgary that packs surplus crates of either ammo.

I have both and honestly if you are torn I wold start with the M14 just because it is new and if you feel like tweaking or tacticoling it parts are everywhere. The SVT is a classic but if you want to scope it you are in for some $$$$$$$$ to get it done right. I would definately start with M14, I also ust got one of the first batch of Promag stocks through Mystic Precisiona dn I think this is my go to gun now for the range and hunting. I also hunt with my semi auto's too.

Assess how much it's going to cost to feed and assess how much your going to shoot, or want to ;)'

Norinco- Possible issues?

Most likely not. Shot a lot through my Poly 2009, no issues.

The SVT seems to me to be the more reliable shooter

Don't own a SVT, but my M14 couldn't be more reliable.
She's my go-to rifle when others pack in and also my regular shooter.
Always there, ready to go all the time every time.
A beautiful piece.

It's the best firearm I own, bar none :D

But again: Asses how much it's going to cost to feed and asses how much your going to shoot, or want to ;)'

from what i hear thats gonna be a problem with the M14 too. millsurp 7.62 nato is supposed to be getting a bit trickier to find soon, or so im told.

Solution- Get your brother to buy a tokarev and buy a nice little m14 for yourself. :) its shaping up to be a good summer

If you want a shooter = SVT-40. Cheaper ammo even when 7.62NATO surplus is available. If you want a long term project to waste a bunch of money on then get the M14. One is a chinese knock-off, the other is the real deal. I had both, sold the M14.

Just as an FYI, All things Military in Calgary have one 880 round surplus 7.62X54R crate left. I think that TSE had some as well but I couldn't connect with anybody in their store last time I called.

Just looking up the SVT-40 now, wiki says: "In service, SVTs frequently suffered from vertical shot dispersion." I can say though, that the M14 can have the same kind of issues.

Another point, "In Soviet service, new weapons like the SKS and the AK-47 made the SVT obsolete". A russian refurbished SKS can mostly be considered 'better then new', and still shoots a .30 caliber round AND costs only $200 on average.

However, considering the M14 platform went on to take a Designated Marksman role in Iraq, that was the way I went. (Also because it accepted scopes much easier, which is the way I went)

Personally, I think the SVT-40 (and the SKS for that matter) are an absolutely BEAUTIFUL rifle. Functionally however, I found I prefered the M14 and sold my SKS. If shooting irons, I would have absolutely no issues shooting the M14, the SKS, and most likely the SVT.

Either way you go, please post pics

I own a Springfield, a 305 and a Tokarev, love my 305 very reliable + 2000 shots no problems and accurate. My Springfield is the original American made M-14 but dont shoot better than my Norinco. Now the Tokarev is a wartime rifle that is very well made and very accurate maybe a bit more than my M-14 and is real Russian craftmanship of efficiency... A Norinco is a chinesse copy the Springfield cost 2000.00 and the Tokarev is the real thing for 300.00 if you can buy both you wont regret it a minute they are so fun to shoot... JP.

As an owner of a M305 (norc m14 knockoff) I can say that, for the price I paid, it's a good rifle. Since I'm more interested in hunting accuracy than range accuracy, I sent my M305 off to M14 Doctor for conversion into a scout/shorty rifle.

I will say that the M305 is a more than acceptable hunting rifle, provided you're willing to pack the weight. AFAIK the SVT weighs about the same, so no winner there.

I'd pick the M305 because of one simple thing - the ammo you feed it.

I think you've got a much better chance of finding .308 Winchester ammo at your local store than you will find 7.62x54, surplus or new factory ammo.

You're in Alberta, but I don't know where exactly. Most Canadian Tire stores carry .308Win ammo, and I've yet to see one that carries 7.62x54 Russian.

It's your call, but if it were me (and it WAS me a year ago :p:))I'd go with the M305 because ammo is easier to find.
