Action needed from all BC hunters!( and non hunters)

... I'm not a Hunter, BUT I've already Written, to both the Minister(s) and my Local "Politician" as this is really a massive Injustice and is tantamount to the Provincial Government Subsidizing a Commercial business ( To say nothing of the Government adding a huge amount of Value to the Business. ( One that was never intended to be a large scale, year round type of Commercial Operation ) ...... Amazing what a well funded Lobby Group can achieve via the Back door ! ..... David K

I know what you mean, wading through 20-odd pages of government-ese gave me a headache, but it seems to me that 250 guides have enough "clout" (or better organization:() vs. 95 000 resident hunters and are trying to get even more of the animals than they already have. Feel free to correct me, but in the meantime, I copied Dean's letter and fired it off.
 
i know we aren't supposed to hot link so i won't but you BC resident hunters shoudl find a local chapter of the BC resident hunter's association and join...... and then convince all your friends to join.

the problem is representation and what the government sets as rules for qualifying to be "at the table" when hunting allocations are discussed. If you fail to meet the criteria, you do not have a voice at the table no matter how many letters you write.

so, enter the fairly new organization, BC resident hunters association, which is currently forming chapters in each of BC's hunting regions. Once enough members have been accumulated, the qualifications to sit at the table across from the guide outfitters association at ministry meetings will be achieved.
so..... find out about your local chapter and join, these guys are working for us with no hidden agendas. Hunting rights and allocations for resident hunters ahead of guide outfitting allocations is the goal.... as it should be.

geebus, the last guy i knew that was a well know b.c. guide, quit when he decided that flying around in airplanes spotting moose and landing hunters as close as possible wasn't really guiding ...... matter of fact it's strictly forbidden in the regulations.

in my opinion, though it sounds rude and challenging..... put up or shut up. Join your local BC resident hunter's association and if you need contact info, email with "resident hunter" in the email title and i'll pass on the president's contact info. I am not affiliated in any form with the memberhip drive, I'm simply a member and i support the group and it's ideals 1000% .... if yer a b.c. resident who is concerned about hunting practices and allocations..... you should be a member too. ;)
 
.. I got the Information through my Local Fish and Game Club. Also BC Wildlife has information . Basically, though, the guides Association has successfully Lobbied and achieved through the indifference largely,of the Ministry, to increase their share of the sustainable resource in the form of Tags NOT filled and expand their Hunting areas. This is on going and taking more Animals from the limited Entry areas and allowing the guide to have the "Limited Entires". The Guiding Outfits have become larger and larger over the years,and by increasing their share of the Limited entries the Government, and it's Provincial, have in effect subsidized, and guaranteed, the both the Value and sustainability of the Guiding Outfits. And we're not talking Chump Change here either. Another issue is what occurs is the increased value and allotment's/Territories, have made the Guiding Outfits much more attractive to European purchase, and direct Cash infusions, and Control. Hunting by Residents has become and Endangered Activity, and is being effectively squeezed out of existence to support Commercial interests. And that's before you get into the Native Land and Hunting Issues. ....... Again I'm NOT a Hunter, but this does directly affect those that doe, and more s so those the depend on the Hunting to support their Food Supplies and families. ..Plus it's just plain unfair !! .... from what is proposed by the looks of it the hunting tags will get split 75% residential hunters 25% guides, the biggest thing was guides sharing tags, meaning if I have 5 tags I cant fill in my 5 year quota then I can sell them to you if you own the ajoining territory and as long as its not under preasure(were this is decided I dont know)

this is not screwing anyone out of there rights to hunt, mostly meant to help the guides out through the ruff economy thats stopping alot of non residents from comming here.
in the end it may be the start to humping the averge resident without vaseline or it may not but for now I dont see a 5 year test run hurting anyone that bad imho at this time......BUT it dosnt mean that we shouldnt write in a voice our opinions on it either ;)
 
... What has already happened is that the Guides have consistantly expanded their territories, and this expands then further. It also means that they get to take a greater percentage of the Limited entry tags ( allocations ) ... I'm sure that most of the fish and game Clubs will have links, and I'm sure that the Enderby Club and probably Vernon, will have available a more concise and accurate version than what I've posted. Which was done from memory, as I sent the letter some two months ago. ...... GOABC did an end run to the minister immediately after Christy Clark's cabinet shuffle to start lobbying. This was discussed at the BCWF AGM and the minster was in attendance and very quickly educated on the issue. I think there will be some changes very soon, as sonn of the minister's fellow MLAs are BCWF members.

Not exactly right,the guides have been appealing to the Environmental Appeal Board for MORE quota.Also the Allocation Policy will have been through its 5 year trial period and is due for implementation in 2012.The GOs signed off on it in 2007(along with the Government and the BCWF).Now they've decided that they don't like it and want changes that benefit them at the exspense of the Allocation for resident hunters.It is not right that the Government subsidises 240 G/Os selling big money hunts to foreigners by taking quota from 95,000 Resident hunters.We are all taking a hit from the worldwide reccession,is the Government prepared to bail out your business?Why should G/Os be exempt. Mur
 
.. Thanks "MUR" you've put it very well, and it does affect more than just the Hunter's in my view. A matter of Foreign Control ( benign perhaps ) and Utilization of our Natural Resources by creating a Privileged Class of Non Residents. And certainly, the Guided Hunts do bring in a HUGE amount of Money, but at what Price ? .... David K

There are already many access closures that basically allow only guides to hunt in those areas.

This is junk, Im not so much of a hunter myself either but this can have a huge snowball effect.

there are no areas that access is denied to resident hunters, a guide may bellyache at you but he cant stop you from being there if its legal hunting season in that area and if they mess with you call the co's ....some facts would be nice rather than hearsay :rolleyes:

When you read this thread please understand that I am NOT calling for the elimination of the G/O business in BC.What I am asking from the Government is some fair play in dealing with this situation.THe GOABC already enjoys the highest percentage allocation of game animals of any jurisdiction in North America(exept the Yukon and NWT,where there are few non-aborigonal resident hunters),yet they are asking for more quota.Every animal they are awarded is more money in their pockets and less opportunity for the taxpaying Resident Hunters in BC.According to the Government,"Residents have priority over NonResidents",but that is not the way this is playing out.I just once would like to see the Government enact a policy that gives more than lip service to their signed agreements,and implement the Allocation policy in 2012 as agreed by all parties in 2007. Sorry bone-collector,there are a number of roads in the Kootenays that have been closed to hunter motorised access,but the guides have keys to the gates and can use vehicles to transport supplies and customers to their camps.There have been sweetheart deals in the past between Regional Managers and GOs,the AP calls for these decisions to be made in Victoria,the Guides don't like that they want the Regional Managers in charge so they would like that section taken out of the AP.
