Rain Gear? and Taxidermist? whitehorse dall sheep

I am heading to the yukon for a dall sheep combo hunt, the outfitter wants to be sure i wear good rain gear, his concern is that most gear gets torn by branches while horse backing in, i understand this and agree this would be bad. I am worried about packing around a supper heavy rain set for 2 weeks up and down mountains. Any recommendations?

I am also looking for any recommendations on a taxidermist for dall sheep in white horse?

i have used the cabelas packlite rain gear for a few years up there. i wore a set out in a season but they made it. take 2 sets if your doing the horse thing. i kept my packlight in my pack and had a heavy set for riding or later in the fall when guiding moose.

shane buchanan of northfork taxidermy in whitehorse has most of the outfitted trophys come through their shop. they can ship and crate or do your mount for you.

if you need a raingear for horse riding and another one for hiking (horse will carry a lot for you) i ll take any fisherman rain gear like helly Hansen (they re heavy but works well) then for the hiking a set of helly hansen impertech ...

what brand your outfitter is recommending ???!!!
 
Helly Hansen Impertech is nigh on tearproof, streachy and super light. It also comes in olive green. :D

If you don't mind a bit more weight and you want to be warm AND dry take a look at Rivers West. Again, 100% tearproof and you could sit in a puddle and stay dry.

I agree. The HH bibs are especially good, used them on two Yukon horseback hunts with no complaints. Stay away from pants, bibs are far superior for comfort and venting.
 
i have thought about 2 sets, i have a good light weight set of mountain hardware, that i though would go in my pack, the outfitter uses carhart rain gear, says he will use them for his 3rd season, he usually gets through 1 season with everything else. He says bring goretex, bibs and make it tough. He says Rivers west is tough enough, but really hot while climbing, and i have to agree i have 2 sets and they are great for deer hunting when you are not moving to much, but i take them off when i have to walk around.
I will check out the HH impertech...
 
Do it right and just go buy a duster. It's my rain gear in the bush. Waterproof, easy to put on, and breathes. Not to mention tough. Duster and oil skin cap = golden.
 
I would bring a heavy set or rain gear for on the horse and lighter for your pack.Both Northfork taxidery and Yukon taxidermy are good.Northfork is a bit more expensive.Good luck on your trip.

carhart pants with helly hanson top is my heavy riding rain rear works good. your system is off to a good start. dont forget to get the best boots you can find.

what outfitter are you hunting with?

I am getting a 412 7/8" B&C mountain caribou done in Whitehorse right now by a fellow that runs a small shop. I've met him a couple times and have seen his work. It is as good as any and less expensive. He did the #1 B&C Mountain Caribou that went to Reno, has a very nice portfolio and is a B&C scorer to boot. I won't mention his name on line w/o asking him first. If you are interested, PM me and I will put you in touch with him.

Got the boots and they are nice and broken in, going with dickson, i know a guy that used to guide for them, says they are great people and will work hard to get me a sheep. I have talked with them on the phone and they are real down to earth and friendly.

I like the impertech they seem like a good all around gear, light weight, flexible and way tougher than your "breathable" rain gear. The carhart seems really tough, i will see how much my bags start to weigh and go from there. I was looking at the impertechII seems to be a little more user friendly.
