New 358 Norma Mag. ** UPDATED **

hey, cool to see this post. I found myself a Husky 1651 in 358NM this winter...they definaly get your attention with 250s' at 2750, especially in a 7 1/2 lb gun!!! Mines using H4350 and 250g Hotcores, she goes 3 for 1 1/2".

Apparently those results were repeatable. Fired these today. :D

He and I both use 4895 and 4350, and I think he has also used Re19..

67.5 gr of 4895 is the magic recipe for velocity with accuracy, and 4350 is right behind.

Actually, the 358 NM is one of those cartridges that works well with a lot of different powders. I have used 3031, 4320, 760, CF8506, as well as 4895 and 4350 with complete satisfaction.

With the 250 grainers I use H/IMR 4350, RL17 and W760. They all do pretty well. With the 225 grainers (i.e. Barnes TSX), I prefer faster powders, such as RL15, H380, Varget, IMR 4064 and H/IMR 4895.

Ted, not sure if that's what you wanted and I"m sure you already know this, but it's a matter of case capacity vs bore size / bullet weight ratio. The larger bore areas command faster burning powders to create the pressure peak, and this is easily demonstrated by the various 9.3's wich really perform better with the faster of the medium burning speed powders to produce top velocities. Medium bore calibers (starting at, say 8mm) will always push the same bullet weight faster than the small calibers (.312 and below) based on the same peak pressure and case capacity and it's obvious when we compare the .308 Win with the .338 Fed. (or, say, the 30-06 Sprgd vs the .338-06), but with equal bullet weight, the 338 will need a faster burning powder to achieve this.
To me, the Powley Computer demonstrates it very well.

:)Me to. I've been looking for a Schultz & Larsen in 358NM and had turned down a few other brands in that caliber, until Ted sent me pictures. After seeing what he was offering for sale;), I couldn't turn it down.

Eventually, I'd still like to get a Schultz but I may 'need' two in 358NM :pso this one's a keeper.
I happened into a 'fair' quantity of new Norma brass and in addition, at a local gun show, I lucked into seven boxes of 250gr Norma factory ammo. Decent accuracy but I will be going to 225gr Barnes TSX with IMR 4350 in future reloads.
