I'm thinking of ordering a reamer and some sizing dies and making a few of these to drop into savage rifles. Basically an improved .330 Dakota. The guy who came up it is getting 3005 fps with 250 grain Sierras with an OAL that fits a long action savage mag and 300 grain smk's at 2800 fps, both in a 26" bbl. Brass is easy to make by fire forming .330 dakota brass. Just waiting on brass availability then this project is a go.

"The Rum has about 6gr more powder capacity compared to the 338 Sin. The 338 Sin has 13grs more powder capacity then the 330 Dakota, The 338 Sin has about 5grs more powder capacity then the 340 weatherby. So you can see where the 338 Sin falls in comparison. It will shoot right with the edge/rum and be a repeater on any std long action with a magnum bolt face and the availability of the Norma brass is a plus over the edge."

I'v been trying not to reply to this thread but unfortunately I have to admit that I am very interested in this cartridge. I read Sins thread over on long range hunting and it seems like a great/affordable way for someone with a savage long action to get into the wonderful world of 338 and still have it feed reliably.
Unfortunately, I am also interested in 20 vartarg, 6mmbr or whether just to buy another 223 or 308 barrel. It takes me a while to conclude my decisions sometimes but I would not be surprised if I bought a savage package in 300 wm as a base. Its nice to have something different. :D

Sean, its perhaps still early days but when do you think you will have reamers and dies available and be set up to churn these babies out?

OK. Decision over. :D I am going to pick up a stevens 200 in 300 win mag today to use as a donor.

I'm wondering, if there is a 7mm Rem mag available ( I have never had a 7mm) would this be just as good for a donor? Any advantages to using either one in terms of feeding and function in the 338 configuration?

Answers to this one would be appreciated as I have to decide in a few hours.

cheers.

Not aware of any advantage of one over the other

Isn't Nosler Brass built by Norma?

Nosler brass is made by many suppliers depending on caliber, includeing super soft Federal that needs to be run at an idle.
Norma does make some .300 Ultra with their own headstamp, which I'll try when scouring the earth in search of it finally pays off. And some think the Holy Grail is elusive................:(

Hi Warren...just waiting on enough interest.

I wonder if the Dakota's .545 rim diam will be a problem or has this all been done before.

Check out this link. The last few pages discuss using the 330 Dakota brass. I'm wondering what the quality of this brass will be like?

I might be interested in this one next year as I've already blown my gun budget this year and still have 1 more scope to buy and a few more parts.
