Let's hear from guys with some actual trigger time. Is the 17 rem the IDEAL coyote caliber or should it be used as a club for coyotes caught in a trap?

What if the coyote is more than 25 yards? 50 yards? 100 yards?

Do you use a laser range finder or beer goggles to determine distance?

How does it perform in the wind on a grade of 1 to ten? under 5mph. over5mph. How do you measure wind speed?

How many 17 rem users actually skin coyotes for sale or to tan for wall hangers?

Pics of coyotes wounded and/or killed by the 17 rem.

Does anyone who has killed a coyote with a 17 rem. pump it's stomach to see what babies it has been eating?

This is not meant to be a scientific study.:nest:

i have shot one fox with the 17rem hit it about midway and near cut it in half at 100 yards . i love that gun mine is a rem 700 DUTCH

I also have a 700 in 17. I have only shot one coyote with it, and one wild boar! The boar was shot at 200 yards, bullet did not expand and punched right into its heart and it dropped. I haven't had any time to do any calling to get any more with it.

Definitely not the ideal coyote caliber. If you're looking for a hyper velocity long range coyote caliber, go with a 22-250 or 220 Swift if you reload.

Spoken like someone who has not pulled the trigger on a 4000fps bullet.

Quite wrong. I have a 220 and 22-250 and have shot both for many years, mostly the swift. 40 gr btips behind a stout load of varget is the ultimate long range coyote round,IMO. Had a 17 at one time but not for long. Brass and bullet selection not to mention wind drift were a pretty quick deciding factor in dumping it.

I've got a 700 LVSF in 17 Rem. It's my walkabout varminter.
I found that the 25 grain Hornady will leave a loonie sized exit hole on broadside rib shots. Mind you, I've only shot 4 coyotes with it and nothing over 100 yards.

I've got 400 rounds loaded with the 25 grain Berger Match. I've heard they're very fur friendly.

Now that I'm back in "Coyote country" I'm going to do my best to burn up all 400 rounds this winter.

I've got a 220 Swift as well and I find it's hard for the Swift to be "Fur friendly":D

I have used the 17 Rem for just about as long as it has been factory loaded and Remington brought out the 700 chambered for it.
Great to use lengthwise never had a bullet make it through but from the side can be devastatingly hard on fur.
Brass, bullets and dies are just not hard to get.

Under ideal conditions...it works as a coyote gun.
As your go to all the time coyote gun it will get you lots of exercise.
Redfrog you know all this.

I do, but I wish I had a bottle of Forty Creek for every time I've seen a newbie post asking about coyote calibers. There will always be the usual "Ford vs. Chev" suggestions and that's all good if the poster would take the time to explain why he likes "Da Ford". It may be simply because "My dad used one and it's all I've ever used, or it may be because it is very effective, or both.

I've killed lots of coyotes over the years and I also guide for coyote hunting so I get to see different rifles and bullets in the field. I see everything from a Stevens 22:250 to a 300 win mag. I see the terminal result both to the coyote and to the shooter.

With rangefinders being more commonplace a lot of guys learned that distance like size does matter. What they thought was 400 yds is actually 160 yds. There seem to be a lot of Quigleys out there. They shoot a light caliber like the 17 rem. add in the errors in range estimation and you have a 17 rem killing coyotes DRT at 400 yards.

I have seen many coyotes killed with the 17 rem. Heck I've even seen a few killed with a 22lr. In the hands of a good shooter and at a range within reason the 17 Rem will get the job done. But there in lies the rub.

I have a client/friend who can really shoot. He's very picky about his rifle and glass. About 8 years ago he started coming up here to call coyotes. The first year he showed up with a 17 rem. He saves hides[he's a taxidermist] and wanted something that was fur friendly. We discussed the 17 rem and he thought I might give him some grief over the choice. It makes no difference to me if the guy can shoot.

First stand I called three coyotes in. They came in one at a time with about a minute between them. He killed all three with his 17 Rem.:dancingbanana:

There was joy in Mudville. He puffed up and went on about this deadly round.
He did kill coyotes over the next three days, but when they were 150yds or more, it took more than one round to kill them, and soon his partner was taking the shots beyond 150 yds.
Over the years he came back with different rifles. I never saw the 17 Rem again. He went through .223, 204, 22.250, 220 Swift, 243 AI. He settled on the Swift. Kills with authority and with the right bullet not much fur damage.

So as I said the 17 rem or any caliber for that matter will kill coyotes, but a man should know his limitations.

The .223 is a deadly round and fur friendly for coyotes but it doesn't really have the '### appeal' it seems. Maybe with the long gun registry gone we will be able to use the AR15 for hunting. Now that's ###y.:D

Great info RF.
What do you think of a 243?
I've got back problems and want to go to either a 243 or 25-06.
Thanks

I think the 243 is a great round for predators as well as deer/antelope.

I call wolves as well as coyotes and the little extra over a 223 can make the difference between a runner and DRT. It still comes down to the shooter. If you can shoot the 223 then deer and wolves will die.

The 243 can be hard on fur sometimes, but usually no worse than my Swift.

I have 2 clients who shoot 243AI. At six hundred yards they can put them inside a 6 inch circle consistently. I saw them double tap,[shoot on report} a coyote at 406 lasered yards. I could put two fingers through the entrance holes and the exits were the nearly the same.

I'd use a "game' bullet if you want fur. otherwise the varmint rounds may destroy a coyote hide.

I have a 17FB and it's dropped 2 wild boar and 1 coyote with out any problems. I'm presently building a 257 Roberts AI for those longer range coyotes.:D
