I need a short carbine for black bear. I wonder would an sks be enough umph to do the job up to 100 yards. Any experiences hunting with one.

Thanks

Dave

Yes.

Lots of black bears have been taken with a .30/30, which has about 2,000 ft/lb of energy at 100 yards. The 7.62mm x 39 has about 2,300 ft/lb at that distance.

You would not, of course, want to be using FMJ bullets and would have to either buy commercial or load yourself to produce a reliable round for your SKS (wounding a black bear is no time to have feeding problems).

Gonna get some odd looks, mind you.

Thanks. I can get SP ammo locally so no problems. I guess I will go pick one up.

Check that the Soft points will feed ok. In my old SKS I tried a few brands and found there were feed issues. Never had problems with the com bloc steel cased stuff.

folding stock made a very handy bush rifle out of 1 of my SKS , it would deffinatly do the job.the 1.5" to 3.5 " M.O.A @ 100 yrds is more than adequate for hunting. As has been said already just test everything 1st.

Well, SKS's aren't exactly "short" IMO, but they are very much worth having anyway!
