loading and shooting antique cap and ball pistols

so where to start im looking for loaads for atnique cap and ball pistols

now i say pistols becuse im looking for both revolver load data and pepperbox load data

i found a chart some time ago but cant find it now could use some help
 
A great source of info for black powder shooting of any kind is the Dixie Gun Works catalog.

Sam Fadala's book "Black Powder Loading Manual" has tests of various black powder pistols.
Mostly he recommends 20 grs FFFg (by volume) as a starting load for a .36 to .45 cal pistol with a round ball.

yea i know for a fact even in a .36 pepperbox that 20gr is a bit of a over charge i think the charge for all pepperbox's was 15gr max

i dont know about pre 1897 cap and ball revolvers what the charge should be you got to rember that the steel is not like what we have today where most new made cap and ball guns are going to be 4140 for the barrel and cylinder
