I was out walking thru the pasture today looking for gophers, I haven't seen them in about a week. I noticed a HUGE hole and I'm not to sure what it is, but all that comes to mind is a badger.

Has anyone ever had a badger problem?

I'm going to go and get a game camera tomorrow and see whats in there.

Can I shoot it if i see it?

Are they Nocturnal?

Thanks guys!

I used to trap a lot of them back in the day. They sure can clean up on the gopher fields. A few years back there was a huge old sow that would follow me around and pick up the gophers after I was done shooting. If they are nocturnal, I sure see a lot of them through the daylight hours.

Yep, you got badgers. They can make a real mess in a hurry, not sure what AB. law says regading shooting the varmints. Lots of guys trap them when in season. On my operation i wack em on sight.

yup i shoot em on sight. a .22 will do it, but if you have something bigger i reccommend it, they are resillaint little buggers. i shot one with a .22 a few years ago from about 10 yards. it ran down it's hole i could see a blood trail. half an hour later i came back to teh same spot and his hole was filled in with dirt. a couple days later my dog was chasing him so i called him back and put 3 more .22 shells in the badger to make sure he was dead. the 1st shot hit him near the neck, but didn't kill him.

Go nuts and shoot them, but try to be ethical about it. Like I say a .22 will do the job, but make sure you have a good shot a .204 or .223 would do a much better job.

i'm not sure about the HMR. I don't know much about them other than they are more accurate at distance. I'm not sure about their "stopping power" Like i said a .22 works just fine, but be sure of your shot and pump a few rounds in it and your good. I just thought i'd warn you that they're tough little buggers.

Next thing we know there will be "what is the best badger defence gun" threads all over the place lol.

I wanna be the only one doing the gopher killing around here. The hole it has dug, my dog could fit in and hes no small boy.

well the trail cam is out their tonight so we shall see.

Ya if all you have with you is a .22lr shoot it with that. I've shot a few and unless you get a head shot they will keep going when you shoot them with a .22lr(also ran over one 3 times in a tractor before he stopped running...yay stubble fields :p) . Larger caliber recommended if your specifically going after the badger.

What's wrong with badgers? They are great and killing off gophers.

I would much rather have gopher holes than badger holes in my field, so would the livestock. Problem is if you have many gophers you will most likely have badgers...

Last year I had five at one time in my field one night, man they made a mess. Spotted them with a big spotlight, eyes were going everywhere.

I also noticed a fresh black hole yesterday morning out in my field. He has been hanging out there for a while as there are fresh tracks and sh1t all over. Going to try and sneak up on the little bastard when the sun comes up this morning.

Trail cam goes up tonight.... Standby

If you are positive what whole he is in take a truck with a water tank and start filling the hole, he will come out for sure, just be ready. When growing up on the farm this is how we used to do them in. When they would come up for air a long handled shovel would finish them off.

I just thought i'd warn you that they're tough little buggers.

Damn straight they are! If you have ever skinned one you would know they are built like small tanks .
