Any Interest in the .338 SIN

Why not just build a 338 Norma?

I think you make a good point. If you read the long range hunting thread I posted above you will see the questions regarding 338 Norma answered. The main being that the 338 Norma uses a Lapua bolt face and that the Sinn uses the standard magnum bolt face which is readily available. Thats what I took away from the discussion anyway. You might find the point moot. In general I find your posts insightful and would appreciate any thoughts/feeedback you have.

Hi guys, new here and from the states but I figured I would stop by and help anyone that has any questions. The brass works fine with any of the ctr actions. I had to open up the bolt face on a Tikka just a little to make it work with the Dakota brass. The Dakota brass is made by Norma and is top notch, I would hate to have to go back to the remington brass. For powder it looks like Magpro should be one of the leaders in the >251gr bullets for powder of choice.

My scope decided to give up on me on my test rifle so I am waiting for my PST to show up to do more testing. So far I love the round and I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get 10+ firings from the brass.

I am a newbie...what does "ctr actions" mean?

I know this may be a bit of an unfair question but...what type of velocity/accuracy are you expecting to achieve with the .338sin? The brass life sounds excellent.

any more information on this wildcat. Looks interesting. Sinman is the new scope mounted, range report ES-SD

PS: Welcome to the site.

I believe the accuracy/velocity loads should be around 2900ish for the 250gr bullet and 2700ish for the 300gr bullet. Scope is mounted just waiting for the range to reopen and the rain to stop for more than 30 mins. I shipped out 2 rifles in 338 Sin and they should be tested on the 1st so I will have more info after that.

This is a post from another forum from another guy that is testing the 338 sin

FedEx arrived yesterday and I'm leaving for three weeks tonite. So quick update. Used 330 Dakota brass to fireform yesterday. Necked them up to 35 caliber then back down to 338 a little at a time till I got proper headspace off the shoulder. Fireform went well yesterday. Loaded some 225's and 300's in the new fireformed cases. Started with what I considered way light and went up with five increasing loads in each weight bullet to get an idea how much powder to load for some group tests. Only used Magpro in each with 215 primers. Once I get that max I can extrapolate off that for other powders.

Did not reach max in either. I was over 3200 fps with the 225's and over 2700 fps with the 300's with room to continue increasing the charge. Problem is that will be in about three weeks when I return. Appears this will be a great 338 that is very efficient in short barrels. My test barrel is 24". The rifle weighs 6 3/8 pounds. This is as much power as possible in a light rifle since it fits on a shorter, lighter action than the full length RUM's.

I will give a complete report with different powders and max loads when I return and know this isn't much. But it does show this cartridge is very efficient in short barrel lightweight versions. I think it will be everything I thought it would be when I first saw the design.

I'm interested, talked to Stoeger about getting a Tikka Varmint, 338 wm brought over. Converting to 338 sin,
and I believe there is aftermarket bottom with longer coal avaliability now also,
Not in this years budget, but the Varmint will be an excellent platform for my build, all my Tikkas are shooters

If you are getting good results with MagPro, you should give N570 a try, in my rifle it gives higher velocities than MagPro at a much lower pressure and much better accuracy.

Well, 2900 and change with 250's is what I get from both my 340 Wby and my 338 Lapua. The Wby bolt face will be very close. Still, I have a few magnum receivers laying around and a 338 bbl. Hmmmmm. Oh lord I'm getting an itch. - dan

I'm getting 2700 fps (give or take) with the 300 Lapuas. Its the Savage FCP HS. I shot 3, 5 shot groups at 300 yards today. Nothing spectacular 2.3", 2.5" and 3". I tried a 7 shot group but I won't say what that measured. :D

Anyway, I'm sticking with 90 grains of H1000 and just gonna practice till I need a new barrel. I'm very happy with this Savage. But I need more practice.

EDIT: OK in the interest of honesty, 7 shots 4.015" and great conditions. Please don't bar me from the precision forum. lol
