Turkey Box Callers? Help, advice, ridicule and scorn appreciated!

So on placement of the decoys, what do you figure maybe 10 yards or so from the blind? Should they be facing towards, away or parallel with the blind? Should the Hen be infront or behind the Tom or does it not matter? The Hen is 2 position its either standing up like this or its like this down on the ground...

You cant sleep in if you want to get a turkey USP.
Nice decoys... get up early and set them out where you know a big old tom will see them.( paying attention in class{patterning} pays here):D

Best of luck!...

I got some new shells for the hunt, never tried this stuff before. Hevishot Hevi 13 2 3/4s in #4. Will be using LM and SK chokes on my over and under. w:h:w:h:

Thats exactly the image you want the big old tom to see when he walks up on the set.
You want him to want that hen, and push the jake away. And you pull the trigger instead of pulling youre pencil writing down the temperature, and wind direction in youre journal.:D

screw the box call. I used to only use them because they are loud. Not anymore

get a knight and hale glass hammer pot call. Any of the pot calls from that series are good. I can make VERY loud yelps that are either aggressive or passive. I have never had so many turkeys gobble at this call then anything else I have used. I get toms gobbling in the afternoon at this call and never have I done that with the box call. Very easy to use too, I bet in one hour you could have it down pact.

good luck.

I would place my decoys at 18-25 yards, parallel to the blind. Be in the blind, set up at least a half hour before sunrise. Give a few chirps on the call while it is still dark so the roosting birds know where you are at. Be careful not to over call as other members have said. I would not cook in the blind, any coyotes that may come in will smell that a mile away. Modified chokes will work but you may want to invest in a tighter full or extra full choke for longer shots. Good luck with the hunt.

Can somebody give me a sort of call timing? Do I make a cluck or a yelp than how long do I wait in the interval? I am not sure how many calls to make, how often or how loud? Both my box caller and my button caller have ways to make them really loud or quieter.

I would suggest some clucking as quietly as you can, then build it up a little, then 3 or 4 loud barks. That is assuming you dont have a slate call, which I have come to prefer.

I started with the box call for the same reasons you did, but I only use it in very high winds when I need the loudest calling possible. The more time I spend turkey hunting the more I have come to learn that the hens make more quiet little purrs and clucks than anything else. Most of my calling starts with little clucks an purrs followed by 4 loud barks. If I do one loud sequence te next time that I call in a half hour I may just do some really quiet clucks and purrs. Mix it up a little and don't bark too much! Wild hens can be vocal, but they won't sit and be really loud all day so don't you do that either. I only ever call once every half hour, I use a watch as I can't judge time well enough without it. A buddy of mine that is a really good turkey caller calls every ten minutes, but insists it has been half an hour!

I have given up on the Jake and Tom decoys in favor of 1 or 2 hens only. I set them up 10 to 15 yards from me. I position them with one facing away from me and the other quartering away 45 degrees left or right from that one. Never set them facing you as toms tend to come in behind them. Always leave a few yards between the decoys: when birds are nervous they tend to bunch up, you don't want them to look nervous!

Most important things:

Be vewy vewy quiet.
DO NOT MOVE
do not overcall
Get there EARLY

Let us know how you make out!
