Help Design the Perfect Steel Gong

i'd be in for a few

check out ebay for some design ideas... i bought this one but have yet to try it ht tp://cgi.ebay.com/Gong-Target-8-Diameter-3-8-AR500-Steel-Plate-/120587423160?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c13920db8#ht_603wt_907 I'm an hour from Windsor and had it shipped to my us address, but would much rather get some more much closer too home.

Somthing like a cymbal design at 16" across?? The design works on a drum set so thicker metal and hitting it harder makes sense to me. Might be worth a shot :)

Mattmoser; I have a 4" 10" and a 15" circular gongs that are very similar to your design.

For my interest, I would like to see a square 24"X24" piece for long range. 1200 yards to 2,000 yards. And a "criminal" style one would be good as KDX put it.

Realize that special requests may not be feasable for ya, but hope there is no harm in asking.......

Here are some pics as promised. 3/8" QT400 .308 168rs SMK lower right hand of gong. Gong is 12" diameter.

At what range (or what impact speed)?

FWIW a square gong is probably as easy or easier than making a round gong (a round gong ends up being cut out of a square part of the plate!)

It might be a good idea to carefully match the plate thickness to the desired impact speed. If a plate is to be used for shooting long range *ONLY*, it can be made a lot thinner. This not only makes it cheaper, it also makes it lighter to carry and ship.

how does the QT400 stand up to the 338LM and the 50cal's? I have been using 1" mild steel square plates for less than 400 yards and they big guys beat the piss out of the mild steel. I would think they would dent up the QT400 at "closer ranges" but like what has been posted, should be fine past the 1k mark.

And please define criminal looking?

Thanks

MM

Cymbal shape would be epic for ringing back to the shooter. The problem is that the parabolic shape needs to be created before heat treating for AR500 hardness.

I shot it at 100 yards. Literally walked down a dirt road set up the gong and shot it. Not further tan 100 yard guaranteed.

Nothing wrong with a square gong. There will be less waist from square gongs compared to round gongs.

I wanted AR500 but we could not get any and the shop that I work for had some 3/8 QT400 laying around

I can arrange a "criminal" looking target like you are asking for, I will be at the shop on the weekend so I'll see what I can do, I may make a larger criminal, like real real fat one so it increased the chance of me hitting it.

I will keep you posted, if you are serious about this PM me and we'll see if we can work something out.

Matt,

It was Max Owner who was asking for the outline target, I was just suggesting he was looking for something like the B27 version.

I know that 3/8" ar500 will shrug off 300gr SMKs at as close as 200 yds. By "shrug off" I mean just wipes the paint off, like in the pic. Rings enough where you can hear a .308 hit a a grand. White paint makes seeing hits easy

On thickness , i have two gongs , both 10" x 18" x 3/4" thick . Made from the cutting edge of a 980 Cat loader . Haven't actually weighted them but i'd guess 80 pounds each . Heavy anyway . Heavy enough that i hide them in the bush off a forest cut i shoot across so i don't have to keep loading and unloading them to go out shooting .

Those plates should be about 38lbs each, plus whatever frame you use. Steel is 40.4lb/ft^2 per inch of thickness. That is, a 12"x12"x1" plate will weigh 40.4lb. All carbon steels will be very close to this weight if anybody cares to do some calculations for their projects.

I would move the bolt holes more toward the edge, not so close to the outer part of the circle. I just got 10 plates of 3/8 AR500 (plus a bunch of other stuff) and .223 just barely marks it (Win white box being the biggest culprit for small marks) .308 leaves a splash. Bolts are cheap, just remember to use nylok nuts, regular ones vibrate loose.
