Looks like I finally caught the SKS bug. Has me looking at the deal that Ryan from SFRC has going on...

Don't know much about the SKS, so are there any cons about this semi? Also, I'd probably start out with target shooting, and make my way into predator hunting with this bad boy, so the first mods I'd like to do are- new stock, scope & scope mount, and bipod- all in all, looking for the tacticool look. Seeing as I have about $800 to spend, and taxes and shipping included, would come in, at less than $400, leaving another $400 for all my mods, including the glass: does it sound plausible?

Its pretty pricey on TheAmmoSource, i think Westrifle has them for 175+ship, unless what TAS is selling is not a common Tula... As for the stock they run at about 109-169$, i personnaly like the one with bayonet cut on FabSports but they are on a few other sponsor sites also. When i bought mine the clerk showed me a scope mount that comes with a whole receiver that just slides in and replaces the old one, so you dont have to do any holes, it was priced at 165$ + scope. As for the bipod i couldnt really say..!

Have fun in your SKS quest and keep us posted :p

At $299 for a birch stock SKS, that's just not a deal. It's $100-$120 more than most everywhere else. You can get a hand picked unit for $225-250.I'm not saying that an SKS will not kill a coyote/predator, but they are not,IMO, accurate enough to be a varmint gun.For an $800 budget, you can do much better. You'll throw $800 into an SKS, and if you don't like it, you will still only have a $200 rifle, that's $200 BEFORE you put that half case of corrosive through it.$150ish after. $50 maybe for parts if you forget to clean it when you are done.
At the store in town LAMINATED Russian (Tula) refurbs are under $200.Just go into it with eyes open.An SKS is neither a target rifle nor varmint rifle.Hell of a fun plinker though.
I pimped out my SKS for around $400 total. But no scope, IMO an aperture sight system seems to be the way to go.Because a good solid mounting system is tough to get on an SKS, and a cheap a$$ scope is not worth doing.

The sks is accurate enough within its intended range of about 150 yards. It can be accurized to a degree as well with bedding, and a trigger job.

I've got a bushnell red dot on mine with a CHOATE mount and the set-up has been working really well for me. I did a home trigger job and the rifle has responded really well.

The only drawback to the rifle is with firing corrosive ammo you will need to take a 1/2 hour and clean it after every firing session or it'll rust.

Buy one. You won't be disappointed.

Take it from experience......... avoid any receiver cover mounted scope mount! They just don't hold zero. Been there, done that! So have many others. Best solution is a drill & tap Choate mount. Do it once & forget it! You won't be sorry!

Thanks for all the info! I probably won't get the SKS for the first rifle, as its gonna be doing target/hunting double duty, so I'll spend the $800 on that first, but I've caught the SKS fever, and I think I'll need something for it :p

grab a plinker out of the EE for $150

I just purchased my SKS (second firearm ever) from Westrifle in Vancouver, and they were excellent to deal with. Paid $195.00 and it is in great condition. I also bought my shotgun from SFRC and they were also top notch to deal with.
