Hey all,

Debating picking one of these up tommorow, just wondering on experiences with ammo. Gun will mainly be used for plnking/gophers/coyotes. What kind if groups can I expect from say American eagle 223? And from factory 7.62? And finally from surplus 7.62? I suspect 223 will be more accurate but what will the difference between the factory ammo be? Will I still be able to whack gophers with surplus? What are your thoughts fellas?

I have one in 204 Ruger, loves 32gr bullets. Not many gophers on the right coast, but, crows turn into a cloud of feathers when I do my part. I would go with the 223 before the 7.62X39, it's a much flatter shooting round and you can find cheap ammo even in the backwoods of NS. The only reason I would consider the 7.62X39 is if the rifle would also be used for deer as anything less than 23 cal not allowed in NS. The CZ527 is a well built, accurated rifle and would buy another if anything ever happened to the one I have.
Cheers

Both are very similar in accuracy, have owned a couple of each. Surplus x39 varies hugely, but typically 2-3", good enough and yes you'll hit gophers. With good quality x39, sky's the limit very accurate cartridge and the parent of the PPC benchrest target cartridge family. Gives up no ground to .223.

For American Eagle .223, I could get about 1.5" but every gun is different. The 527 is capable of more than 999 out of 1000 shooters.

choices

The 7.62 is not a round you want to shoot all day in a bolt gun, the recoil is much greater than the 223. I have some hand loads for my 7.62 Cz 527 that group very well. Reloder 7 was the powder..
For what you want to do 223 is the way to go. FS

I really like te cheap shooting of the x39. I can also take small deer with it. If the difference in accuracy at 200 yards is negligible between between the two that seems the likely route. Recoil is a non issue, it doesn't bother me in the heavies so I doubt it will here

Nobody I know is shooting their bolt x39's consistently out to 200 yards esp. with the cheap ammo. This round has a big drop between 100 and 200 yards Accuracy at 200 will be much better with 223. FS

When did CZ start making the Carbine in .204??

I have the 527 in .204 Ruger. It shoots like a laser beam, well under MOA using 39g. Blitzkings. It took me quite a while to work up a load though. It was pretty finicky. If I was buying again I think I'd choose the .223 simply because there's a lot more bullet choices and it's a little more versatile.

My only complaint with this rifle is that the bolt is not that smooth to operate and the magazine didn't work worth a damn. Rounds wouldn't strip out properly and when they did the mag would peel brass right off the case.

What about with factory ammo?

Duncan

You are talking about a round that at the muzzle is what 2250 fps vs factory 223 which is 3500 or better.
Finding a 223 Carbine may also be a challenge, you could have a dealer order one for you.
I think P&D have a new CZ 527 x39 for around $895?
I have tried the cheap ammo in my 527 and groups like you are shooting it out of an SKS, which you might as well buy for shooting this type of ammo. Or you can look at the semi auto Ruger in x39. The CZ 858 shoot the military ammo not too bad, but you don't see that many folks with them on the gopher patch.
Like I said with handloaded ammo you can get some real nice groups with this rifle. FS

There is a fellow in Montana that makes single shot adapters for the 527 chamber that mount flush and feed perfectly. Calhoon is his name. FS

Fasteel, you make an excellent point. I have an SKS and 858. Im probably going to get similar accuracy from those as I will from the carbine. Might as well go with the .223 then I can bang gongs at 200 - 300.

And you will. I shoot milk jugs at 300yds easy with this exact rifle and a run-o-the-mill Burris.
