Shorten PAL Approval Times

After putting it off for about 10 years, I finally challenged the PAL and the RPAL exams and passed, easily. Mind you I have been shooting since I was a kid but when the new laws came into existance, i already had the firearms I wanted for the club I belonged to.
Anyway, I digress.
What happens if there is a postal strike and you haven't received your PAL. Can you print up a temp. from the firearms centre site or are you basically hosed like a fire when the fire dept. show up?

At this point the Ontario CFO is going to take 8 weeks minimum to process your test results. If you call them before 8 weeks they won't even bother to look up your name and see what is happening, they will simply tell you to wait at least 8 weeks then call back.

They do seem to be taking a long time!

My co-worker finally got his back. Wrote the test on March 23rd, got the approved results May 26th. They were actually approved on May 17th.

Hi Guys,

I finished my interviews at the start May (2nd I believe). I also had both references call in shortly after (the same day) and complete theirs. I called back the next day to make sure everything was completed and was told it has been forwarded to the CFO for final approval. I had called the CFO around the 16th or so to inquire as to status and was told it was still under review, and to check back in three weeks and that they just take time to properly process.

Last week I tried calling the CFO office to get some info regarding ATT's. There was no answer and I didn't leave a message. I then called the 1 800 call centre number to ask them if they could answer my ATT question. They were not sure and told me to call my provincial CFO office. I then ask them if they could check the status of my application (seeing as I was already on the phone with them). They told me that it's still under review and to call back 45 days. I then told them I spoke to the CFO a couple weeks back and they told me to check back in three weeks. I was then told not to check back in three weeks and that the 45 day period begins when the CFO recieves my application and to call back sometime after mid June. I then asked again about the 45 day period mentioning that their web site says the 45 period is from Miramichi receiving my application and includes the 28 day waiting period. I was told that's not how it works and the 45 days is from when the CFO receives the application and was again told not to call back till after mid June.

Does this sound right? I don't want to keep calling them, but I don't think checking in every two or three weeks for an update is unreasonable. The person I spoke to at the call centre was very nice to deal with but was very adement about not calling back until after mid June. I really don't care about getting my licence in hand, and I'm in no rush what so ever to run out and buy anything (mind you I do already know what I will eventually be aquiring should I be issued my licence). I just want to know whether or not it's been approved. Do they consider you to be nuisance or flag you or something for calling them every couple weeks?

Thanks for your time.

ps. It was recieved by Miramichi at the end of March and had a missing info issue which delayed things a couple weeks.

Summary: 32 days from receipt to issue.

I'm not able to get Miramichi to even confirm that they have received my application as suggested in the first post. It's been over 2 weeks since it was delivered. Just a heads up.

Update:
16 May received.
2 June posted online! Stephen at Miramichi said they weren't ready to conduct interviews yet, so there's still lots of waiting left.
8 June my interview conducted. Application confirmed "completed correctly."
18 June . "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canada Firearms Centre Toll Free number."

Yes!

I've bought and paid for a new Benelli at one of our sponsors...as soon as I have my PAL # it's shipping!

Yeah, I've been getting a similar run-around: "Everything looks fine, don't call back."

But I hadn't heard the 45-day from the CFO receiving the app (although I'm already closing on that date... they recieved my app Apr 19).

That sounds desperate... like they're changing the rules to accomodate the fact that they are going slow for some reason. Ouch.

Took my CFSC in January, finally got the forms back from the CFO in mid-March, got my form sent to the RCMP a week later, they posted it online April 8, now it's May 31 and online shows my application as "in progress." I've been calling them twice a week to bug them, but they're telling me not to expect my license to be issued for at least 6-8 weeks from now. Is it normal to take 7-8 months for this whole process? This is ridiculous.

My application was delivered to Miramichi and signed for on May 16th. Like yourself I also tried calling, but they would not confirm receipt of my application. I check their web site on a daily basis but it's not even listed.

What's the average time from receiving the application until it is posted on their web site?

My Timeline:

April 11 - 13: CFSC/CFRSC course taken
April 27: Application Mailed to Miramichi via registered mail
April 29: Canada Post online tracking shows application received.
May 23: Application online
May 27: Called 1-800 to inquire about status. Forwarded to interview department. I also asked my first reference to call in same day.
May 30: I asked my second reference to call them for interview
June 2: PAL Approved according to online status.

Now I wait and pray that I'm not affected by postal strike.

If you're anxious to get going, consider sending it via Fedex or some other courier. It shouldn't cost more, or much more, than registered lettermail with Canada Post.

xpresspost was like $34 from Toronto.. kinda pricey. took 2 days to get there

45 Days to Process?

May 16: Application received
June 2: Posted on the RCMP web site

Quote: "Note: An accurately completed firearms licence application normally takes about 45 days to process. Incomplete and inaccurate information can add additional processing time."

Yesterday when my application status was visible on on their web site I noticed the following message - 45 days to process. I thought it was 28 days?

OK.. squeaky wheel gets the grease I guess. Here's the final timeline. (I think people like seeing these to compare)

Feb 28 - Passed Exams
April 27 - Received Stamped Results
April 27 - xpress post to RCMP
May 2 - received
May 27 - Interview + reference interviews
June 3 - Issued

Edited.. I went back and read the first post. ;) *avoids flames*

I just got off the phone with the RCMP.

They called me because on my attached letter, I stated that I would mail my stamped test results as soon as I received them from the Ontario CFO.

She called to tell me due to the postal strike I should fax (1-800-411-0622) in the test results.
