Production as in IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) Production Class, it's a shooting competition where you can only use guns which 1st shot is either a double action or striker fired (ie glock), and no modifications to the gun.
So your sp-01 tactical would be a nice production gun provided it hasn't been modified. It also has the advantage that after decocking, the hammer is still half cocked, so that your double action is more like 1& 1/2 action. Sig's double action for example is longer.
Anyway going back to the 97... if you don't know what i meant by production you obviously don't compete in IPSC.
I see no reason going the 97bd route vs. 97b. Other than you can get a 2nd strike on the ammo if the 1st hammer strike doesn't cause it to fire. Doesn't happen that often with factory ammo.
Some people doesn't find that feature useful as they just check the magazine ensure it's fully in, rack the slide, and keep on shooting. The disadvantage with 2nd strike ability is that if you load your own ammo, and you have one round without any gunpowder or very little, you risk running into a scenario where you pull the trigger, the ammo without powder propells the bullet forward but without enough force that the bullet gets stuck in the barrel, and if you have a very very weak recoil spring, the gun might chamber a 2nd round and as you pull the trigger... well you know what happens next. This can happen in theory, but has never happened... at least I haven't heard.
Another reason people like the decocker is because they can carry it loaded for a long time without having to worry about the mainspring weakening. If they did that with a non-decocker/single action only gun then that's something they would worried about. but nobody in their right mind would conceal carry a 97b... it would be trying to hide an elephant on an airfield...
