I have one 'quality' scope - a NF NXS 8-32x56 - and a number of what I think of as medium-high scopes ( Elite 4200's 6500's and a Siii 10-50x60 ) but am looking to purchase another high end scope. This would be used on a TRG as a target ( ie no hunting application ) scope out to the max effective range of a .308.

I had my mind set on another NXS ( 12-42x56 ) but have also thought of the European scopes like the S+B and Zeiss - I would trade off some magnification for clarity/quality perhaps. I know the only way to really determine is to try as many scopes as you can before purchasing but this isn't so easy to do with high priced scopes as not everyone has them available.

What are the thoughts of the CGN optics guru's ?
 
if you have the $ i would go with a S&B, it doesnt get much, if any better! iv got one of their 12.5-50x56s on order, and have played around with my buddies pmII 5-25, after looking threw that, every thing else fails in comparison. next to that id with a NF. the mark 4 by leupold would be another decent option but i think the mag only gues up to 22x , which for a trg might be a bit low, but as you know clarity makes up for magnification. unfortuanatly i cant give you any insite to the Zeiss
 
Some of the European glass is very nice, the issues I see with most of the offerings in high end Euro glass is that they are mostly FFP, which holds little interest to me as the reticle changes size with magnification and the fact that most Eurpoean reticles are quite thick and mostly in metric. I am a MOA guy.

For hunting scopes Zeiss and Swarovki are great, they are light and optical quality is superb. Not as rugged as the tactical style scopes are, but for range work pleanty tough enough.

I would not touch an IOR due to warranty issues being a nightmare to deal with. Check with Peter at Hirsch for more details there.

I would think for the TRG a lower magnification NFs would be a better choice due to reticle options and serviceability, not to mention less $$. And you are used to the NF already. The 12x42 has only 45 MOA total elevation in it, so you coud be limiting how far you can stretch the rifles legs.

I have a 2nd FP S&B ordered in the 10x50 power range to go onto 1 of my 50s. I am hoping it is as good optically as their FFP scopes, just wish they had more reticle choices.
 
I'd be interested in hearing how the 2nd FP 10-50 PMII from S+B works out for you. Whatever new scope is acquired will only be on the TRG till the end of the year - after that it will hopefully reside on the nice Stiller that Santa will bring me from Alberta :)
 
ATR - sounds like we have the same scope on order, from EVERY thing i have been able to find on the scope, the glass is as good as it gets for a scope with that high of a mag, so i dont think there is any thing to worry about

I'll let you know as soon as I have some time with it.
I am VERY hopeful it will fit the bill. If it comes in before my new 50 does it will get to live on top of the 300 barrel burner I built last week.

Thanks Santa ! BTW - you should run a pool to see who comes the closest to calling the number of shots that new 338 burner will handle before the barrel is cooked and only useful as a jack handle LOL !
 
Sightron SIII 6-24X50. You'll be blown away by the glass.

100mins of elevation and new reticles.

This is what I use for LR plinking

If you want more mag, SIII 8-32X56.

However, if you have the resources, S&B had the best glass I have seen in a moderate mag scope. I have not seen their super high mags scopes yet.

I am not worried. I have bought plenty of high end optics then not liked them and sold them, so that is my "worst case scenario"
I am hopeful that this particular optic is something I like. I guess time will tell.
 
I have 2 Premier Reticle 5X25 that I purchased from ATRS. I really like them, and I am a Mil/Mil guy and a FFP.The turrets are the "cats ass"
for zeroing/adjustment.The glass is some of the best I've looked through. Just my $.02. ATRS is G2G for any scope purchase IMO.

I am really glad that you like the Premiers. I agree the optical quality is 1st rate.
I just wish I could get into FFP, but after all these years of 2FP it is hard and with the number of optics I would need to change so all would be the same, expensive.
 
On both my TRG i have S&B 5X25X56 those are the bests scopes i ever own clarity, quality of focusing and holding it zero like its boring for myself S&B are the top quality but i think they go for 3500.00 a piece now but they worth every penny... Cheers. JP.
