My First Big Game Animal, and First Bear!

So as the title says, this is my first bear.
He came in around 8pm last night, and gave me a good shot at 8:30pm.
I shot him at about 50 yards, he was broadside to me kneeling down, the 170gr winchester flat point hit just behind and below the shoulder, and hit his front leg on its way out.
He weighed about 150lbs.

It is indeed a .30-30, a pre-64 model 94 winchester.

There was a big fella, at least twice this ones size, who was coming to the site occasionally also, but at erratic times, and never while i was able to hunt. I'll save that trophy for next year

Most of the bears shot around here are 150 lbs, so don't let anyone give you any crap about its size. I've talked to guides and wardens in NB, and they'll tell you that everyone thinks they got a 400-lb bear, but this is much closer to reality. I don't know if that holds in Alberta, but I bet it's not far off.

Looks like the one I got last year. Just a little one. But the meat is delicious. And like you I was hunting it's bigger version. I hope to get the big one this year.
