I live in really rugged terrain on the west coast, and I always have a hard time deciding what to take for deer. Up until now, the only deer I shot were with Enfields and Mosins. I bought a Win94 recently but I also own an 858. I'm having a really hard time trying to find something Winchester has over the CZ. T

The 858 strong points:

* It's folding and smaller than the Win94
* It's semi auto
* Mag fed. If I see a deer while driving to my hunting area, I don't have to fiddle with a tube mag. The last deer I shot with my mosin I found loading off a stripper clip took too much time. Luckily it was a stupid deer and stood there looking at me.
* Pistol grip
* Synthetic furniture
* Ease of cleaning after getting soaked. I can get into the receiver of my 858 without tools, and there's no tube mag to clean. I don't have to protect the wood either. The gun is covered with paint, which is better than bluing in my opinion. This is an enormous factor on the west coast, where 80%+ of your hunting trips will get your gun wet. I don't have to apply oil to the barrel and tube mag either.

Win94 scores points on:

* Ammo availability
* Price

These guns score the same (in my opinion):

* Accuracy
* Reliability
* Weight and size
* Knock down power

Am I missing something here? I know that hunting ammo for the 7.62x39 hasn't made it to Wal-Mart or CT yet, but what does the Win94 have on the 858? They both really only have one bullet weight, 125g vs 170g. Both of which are more than capable on black bear or deer.

I find myself getting into this debate very often with my hunting friends, and about the only argument (which I think is wrong) that they make is that the 170g RN bullet punches through bush better.

I'm curious what people who own both, or have owned both, have to say on the topic.

They are both fantastic firearms. I haven't shot a deer with 7.62 yet, but I shot a few with a 30-30 Winchester and it did just fine. The 7.62 isn't too far behind, just don't stretch it. A good rule for guns like these and my 45-70 etc, is if you can hit it cleanly with open sights, the gun is going to do it's job.

I found that when I was hunting with a 30-30, or even my marlin 45-70, if I'm not loaded and I see a deer, I drop one into the chamber and add one or two into the gate if I have time. A shell in the hand drops into an open lever or pump gun chamber pretty fast.

The tube fed lever guns are the magazine fed semi auto's of North American history, there's a good reason why they are still around.

Can't g wrong with either. I have used both. Don't have to defend the .30-30's record on deer (and many animals larger by the way), and the 7.62x39 works fine too. My last deer shot was with my CZ858, and the 123 grain PSP PRVI hammered it to the ground - DRT. The Win 94 is more for nostalgia, the CZ more for pissing of libtards. Both have their legitimate use.

Ar180shooter, I do agree. I have both, and my CZ goes with me the vast majority of the time. I really like the way i can carry it with a tactical sling and it is then always in my hands for a quick shot. Shorter mags would make life a little better yet.

I hear ya about buying the 5 shot mags, but I refuse to pay more for one that you do for a 5/30 mag. Seems like robbery to me. That being said, it is my own stubborness.

Neither can the tens of millions of AK47 owners, but we can't have those here. The CZ would then be the next logical choice ...

Where are AK47's used for deer hunting?

I think you'd have to handload to reach 30-30 levels in the CZ. I would expect the CZ to be heavier, those little 94's are pretty handy guns.

Personal preference I guess, though you'd certainly look more like a hunter carrying the Winchester.

Yeah, I don't hunt with a 30 round banana mag, I have the paratrooper 10 round mag from Wolverine. I took the gun out once but never shot anything. I brought both mags, and found the 30 rounder to be quite the annoyance.

So can anyone come up with something that I'm missing?

Lot's of places in the USA can use AK's for deer hunting. They usually have to comply with a state hunting law for five round mags for hunting though. I was only being a pain in the butt with the comment though as 7 million model 94 owners may or may not be right. It was not hard for Winchester to sell that many guns when they were one of the few offering viable options at the time.

I am not sure if a CZ with a five round mag would be heavier than a model 94 with a full load of ammo on board. I know that the CZ's are very light for what they are, and that a model 94 carries like an axe handle in the bush too, so it would be a hard call on weight.

These two guns are so similar, it's alarming. I think they weigh exactly the same, around 6lbs. The 858 carries a little easier in the bush if neither guns have slings, but only because it has a pistol grip.

The argument that 7.5million Win94 owners can't be wrong is kind of silly in my opinion. That type of cliche thinking is what keeps people from asking questions.

I dunno. I've never had a better balanced carrying and quicker to the shoulder rifle than my .30-30 model 94. Never tried a CZ858 though...

The Win94 definitely has balance and great snap shot characteristics, better than anything else in my collection but tied with the 858. The Win94 has a nicer trigger, but the half #### safety method is crap when you compare it to the 858.

Like I keep saying, it's unbelievable how comparable these rifles are.

buddy of mine was shooting moose with 7.62 x 39. (sks) I would go with the cz 858 with short mag. although i have never shot a 94. On the plus side you can go out and have fun shooting the cz 858 with the surplus ammo:) and if you get good enough you can take a deer down by bumper firing the 858....... lol!!!!

He bagged a moose with an SKS? How was the penetration and what kind of ammo was he using? I'm curious what the range was and what part of the moose he hit. Did you recover the bullet by chance?
