Is anyone else a fan of the classic 870 riot guns? I'm talking about the guns with bead-sighted 18-20" barrels and wood furniture, with or without magazine extensions. Simple and effective, with no mall-ninja extras.

I would love to get my hands on one exactly like this (let me know if you one to sell :))

Buy a Model 870 Express Syntehtic with 7 round capacity

Then buy the wood stock and forend off Brownells or another supplier

I've had Express 970's and was not impressed with the finish. An actual parkerized Police model with wood stocks, or perhaps even an Express that has been Armacoated or parkerized, are what interests me.

It doesn't have a parked finish (yet), but it is close to your picture:

older Wingmaster 870, 2.75" receiver
18.5" Express barrel with Remchokes
+2 extension

Still to come are getting it parked by Armacoat and stripping the wood furniture and applying an oil finish.

I would go Ithaca riot or an older Winchester defender before I went with any variation of Remington.

Me too actually, despite my user name. If I did want to build an old school riot 870 however I'd start with an older Wingmaster as the base.

I'm thinking of getting an HP9 and slapping wood on it. Until then I have this:

Crappy pic of an older 870 Wingmaster 2 3/4" with 18.5 barrel and S&J bayonet mount kit.

I'd take an older wingmaster over an HP9 any day of the week.

Would you take an HP9 over a newer 870 Express?

No real plans to get rid of the Wingmaster. ;) I will be sure to handle both the HP9 and an 870 express before I buy. I just want a 3" pump, and I might decide that my 18.5" barrel is short enough for me.

Always laughed at the idea of a shotgun with a bayonet. Even when the 8 round Mossberg 500's went out the shop door like the place was on fire.
My 870 Wingmaster currently has a 20" rifle sighted barrel. Absolutely nothing 'tactical' about it or any other shotgun.
Came with a plain, 30", barrel that I cut to 18.375" with no sights. Barrel split on me in the middle of a plate shoot. Noticed it before I shot the second string.

Why is a bayonet on a SG any less utilitarian than a bayonet on a rifle? If one is actually engaged in "combat" with a SG, one is probably more likely to be up close and personal than with a rifle, no?

Unless you have a thing for fixed bayonet charging with a shotgun..then I suppose

In a CQB scenario, it would probably be in a narrow hallway or a room.

A bayonet adds length therefore would make taking corners more cumbersome, not worth it. Choose one or the other.

They are good however for stabbing watermelons and then shooting them off.

Yes Sir...especially, when the griz is not dropping on your last shot.

Yeah I like the "plain" look of the riot shotguns simple and elegant, but I opted for the remington factory folder instead. Makes her heavy but atleast she looks purdy.

It is an original tactical shotgun idea. The first pump shot gun inducted into service was the Remington Model 10 'T' grade in WW1. It came to the trenches with a heat shield over the barrel and a bayonet lug, some also had a steel but stock similar in construction to a WW2 sten mk 2.
I personally own a 1928 'O' grade model 10 (riot grade) which has the best fitting mechanical parts like the AA grade guns but with no engraving a very plain straight grain stock. They were issued originally to Police officers and Loomis armored car drivers. Oddly enough mine has a 28" barrel, however being a take down gun I wonder if the barrel isn't from a different gun.
