Why is the VZ58 safety(selector...) lever on the right side?

It just doesn't make sense to me. It just seems to be made to flip it with the thumb, and I'm pretty sure the proportion of left handed czech people is the same as everywhere in the world.

But there has to be a reason for it...

I thought the same thing at first, bought a ambi safety and then used the rifle in a course firing lots of ammo.I found myself using the right side of the selector way more then the left.Should have saved my money.Really its not that hard to manipulate.

I realize you can just flip it with the side of the hand without really breaking the grip, but it just would've been better on the other side of the gun... It's one of those little things...

I guess ergonomics wasn't that hyped back in the 50's.

I believe its for the same reason the mag release is recessed into the trigger guard: sling mounted on left side where contact with body and clothing happens while carrying. Less chance of dropping the mag (which is suppossed to weigh more than mine do...) or flipping the safety off unnexpectedly. Thats how I figure it anyway. If it was LH and flipped forward for fire, it would be perfect IMO.

I thought that it was the easyest way to flip the safety from safe to full auto. With just a flick of the trigger finger.

My understanding is that the goal was to leave the entire left side slick so that the rifle could be slung with nothing jabbing in to you.

So it is actually a fairly ergonomic design feature, depending on your perspective.

I actually don't find it slows me down any, so I decided to leave mine along after quite a bit of thought.

Good point, and I certainly don't disagree with you; but one has to love the ergos of the safety setup on AR's and FN's. I think they are truly ergonomic. Now, to start a real argument, I think the mini 14/m14/garand safety is right where God intended it to be ....:nest:

All right, that makes sense.
