I'm looking to get an Illumination kit to go with my MOE handguard. Few quick questions.

Once the kit is installed, what type of flashlight is needed and what size am I looking for? From what I can tell the kit only comes with 4 pieces, what else would I need to order?

Obviously I would need to order a flashlight but I'm wondering if I'll also need another mounting piece to fix the flashlight into the rifle. Can someone give me some insight please?

P.S. Did a search and found nothing, If anyone has experience with the MOE illumination kit or owns one, please leave some comments on your thoughts on it.

As always, thank you CGNutterz

From the source, Magpul .com:

"The MOE Illumination Kit includes everything needed to mount a 1913 Picatinny rail compatible weapon light to a MOE Hand Guard. The four-piece kit includes a short rail section, cantilever rail mount, two Surefire® optimized pressure switch pad mounts (both old and new styles), and all mounting hardware."

So to me, that sounds like any combat light designed to ride rails will fit, and they have mounting hardware for pressure pads so you dont have to stick em to your gun, granted they're Surefire.

I'd go with a light that was designed to go on a weapon from the beginning, as they're usually tougher to withstand recoil.

So a surefire light? Do they come with mounting rings? Thanks

surefire weapon lights have shock isolated bezels to prevent failure due to repeated recoil/ shock

as for rings included, it depends what you get, but looks like most are included.

surefire lights can be pretty expensive. Any cheaper alternatives?

Lessonz,

Every one of my current ARs has the Illumination kit attached. I have a variety of lights at present, but given the funds, I would go with Surefire X300s, as they will also fit on my pistols. There are other, cheaper options such as TLRs, etc., or even the new Fenix lights, but I have never used them, so can't personally talk about the quality, although they have had some good reviews.

The shock isolated ones are more expensive, but cheaper ones don't tend to last long. Unless you absolutely need a light right now, I would save up for one of the better ones. I believe the phrase is "buy once, cry once".

Regards.

Hey Mark, thanks for the info
The x300 is a nice light, but it's out of my price range right now. I understand that with a light like that your paying for a quality never fail light. With that being said I'd like to get something for approximately $130-150 max $180.

I just can't afford to spend more on it right now, got a few things on the go. ATM.

I'm going to order the kit, providing my guy gets back to me. I'd like to find a light and order one ASAP. With my budget posted above, can you recommend another light to fit into the kit that comes with. Perhaps a fenix. Do you know if they come with a piece to mount onto the kit?

Thanks again my friend

I have the Moe Illumination kit installed on mine. I use a Weaver 1" ring with a plastic insert on a Fenix LD10. I've tested the LD10 through 400 rounds now with it turned on during firing. The only issue was that it sometimes turned to strobe mode during rapid fire. The Moe kit loosened on me some so I recommend Loctite.

That's interesting. So you have the MOE illumination kit, and use a weaver ring with the fenix? I was looking at daves surplus and they have the LD10

is this the ring you use? http://www.frontierfirearms.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=29_882_884&products_id=4317

So if I wanted to use a light with the illumination kit it would need a weaver ring in addition to the kit and light? Any good suggestions on a good weaver ring setup? I'd like to to be somewhat lower profile and tight.

Sorry for the questions, very excited to learn and get a kit running.

P.S. where did u get ur ring and light, and can i see another picture of your firearm with the illum kit?

Clobb is spot on with the mounting option, I am running a couple of Gladius lights on two of my carbine presently using ARMS QR 30mm scope mounts with 1" adaptors. I use the tailcap switches to activate them, but that works for me because of how I hold the forend.

The only downside is that they are a little bulky, but I think the Fenix lights are a little more compact.

Thanks. I think I'm going to get a fenix light, can u lead me into a direction for the right mount? I'm going to get a light from daves tonight, now I'd like to locate the rest.

Cheers

You'll want to use the lowest height ring you can find. This is the one I use:

Get the lowest height one you can find. Remeber, it's not your only option. There are tons of different rings out there...I just had this one on hand.

The Fenix LD10 is the perfect size for my rifle but it's not the perfect light. Please buy the best light your budget will allow. Fenix's are good but they have a bunch of modes and "soft press" feature s**t that isn't necessary on a weapon light. IMO you only need two modes; On and Off. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent light and it has stood up to the testing I've done so far, but you can probably find something more suitable in the same compact package. You will also need to make a plastic insert to fit inside the ring so that you can snug the ring tightly on the LD10 (as it is smaller than the 1" diameter of the ring). Trim up a decent piece of thinner plastic that won't hold any moisture and wrap it on the inside of the ring.

It depends on whether you want a quick release mount or a regular type. I prefer the QR type, as I can get it off without tools in a couple of seconds.

I use the ARMS ones, because I have a bunch of them left over from other projects, and because they use a patented "no mar" plate that will not damage the polymer rail when you close the lever. However, some people don't like them for various reasons.

I got them overseas, but I think Wolverine probably has them in stock, although you can't order online from them.

Clobb may be able to recommend the one he uses with the Fenix, as I don't know the dimensions of the light. Any quality mount should work, just get the right size, probably 1", rather than 30mm.

Clobb posted his reply while I was one finger typing on my iPhone, so he already answered the question.

Thanks to Mark and Clobb and everyone else for help.

Colbb I sent you a PM inregards to the type of rings from the link you sent me.

Cheers

So i've almost decided on a light and i'm looking for an appropriate weaver ring to fit the light into.

I found this on Cabelas Canada...would this work? I'm looking for a 1" low profile detachable ring.

What do my fellow nutters thing?

Using the same thing on my XCR, pretty rock solid. The rings were left over from a rifle I bought, they are currently holding a olight m20 (consider one of those for price). They work great, easy to take off and put on.

also, don't go out and buy a +400 lumen facemelter. 80-120 lumens is plenty for a weapon light.

while surefire is expensive, their products are amazing. I've never had to deal with their customer service and have three different lights from them, all great.

Thanks buddy. I was on arfcom reading about appropriate use of illumination and how it's important not too have a uber powerful light.

So in your opinion the rings are good to go with the magpul kit?
