Just picked up my first rifles and my first milsurp yestarday, a mauser kar 98 israeli maufactured by the czechs. Nice wood on it, chambered to 7.62, lions crest and in overall good shape. Only problem is the safety is stuck in the fire position. I have only fired one of these pieces of history once and had no problem. So was wondering if i'm missing something in regards to moving the safety? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you able to completely remove the bolt from the rifle and put it back in ok?

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by "stuck safety"?

Regards,
Doug

I am able to remove the bolt. I'm not able to move the safety switch from the full left position. Won't budge. Maybe need some lube. This girl has been around the world and some harsh enviroments. Now in another north of Toronto. :)

I had the same problem with my Yugo M24/47 when i first got it, it seemed stuck but it was just hard to move at first. Once i got it to the centre position i removed the bolt and disassembled it and gave it a good cleaning and now i have no problems

Did you have to force it? If so how? I've used two thumbs pushing up and not a budge. Is w d 40 usable on a rifle?

WD-40 isn't particularly useful on a rifle. There are better lubes, better cleaning solvents, much better preservatives.
Dissassemble the bolt completely, including the safety, and make sure everything is clean. This might help.
It is possible that the safety is not able to mechanically engage the cocking piece and cam it back. If this is the case, adjustments may be necessary.

WD 40 would be acceptable to use to try to free the safety. I personaly would disassemble the bolt after and clean it off and apply a proper gun lube when the problem is solved.

I found a tutorial on how to disasemble the bolt assembly. Fully disasebled the bolt and the safety was able to move freely after assembly from safe to half safe but when set to fire it becomes stuck and i had to disasemble again. Any ideas?Almost seems like too much spring force.

Safety might be worn or damaged, I would simply replace it

You may be right on the damaged idea. Looking at the safety switch i noticed as it swivels the bottom of the switch is rounded in the safe and half safe potion but is almost flat on the fire side. Have to have a look at a friends mauser safety this weekend.

"...set to fire it becomes stuck..." After firing? As in on an uncocked bolt? Not exactly sure, but I think the bolt on a Mauser has to be cocked for the safety to work.
WD40 is a penetrating oil and rust preventative(displaces moisture). Not a lube.

It is a cocked bolt but when i put it from half safe to fire i am unable to put safety to half or safe. stuck. Believe the spring may be too stiff or th safety isdamaged.

Bolt must be cocked for the safety to move on mauser action. So if your going from safe to fire, firing, then back to safe it won't work.
Verify your operation first, but it could be crud in there or something, but its a pretty simple part and I don't think bolt disassembly/reassembly would even be possible if you had huge damage in there, cause all that moves for disassembly.

I've ordered a new safety toggle from one the sponsers. I can see the one side of the safety looks to be broken off. Not allowing it to smoothley roll back. Thank you all for the help. Learning alot in the last day. Best part of these milsurps.

The safety on mausers are flat on the Fire position because that disk is the safety, it stops the pin from releasing.
I know mine was rather stiff on my M48BO, due to Cosmoline having dried a little.
