With factory mag dimples shaven, can you later on go back to your factory mag capacity?

Do all modern 20g 870 come with these dimples?

I think I understand what you're asking.

Factory magazine capacity on a REM 870 is 4 shells of the size it's designed for. So 4 shells of 3" length will fit. The magazine cap limits the amount of shells which will fit.

Only 870 Police Magnums do not have the dimples and other 870s which come with factory installed extensions.

When these magazine tube dimples are cut or flattened, they are cut to allow the spring and follower to travel into the extension without obstruction. Some drill them out just to use an aftermarket follower. Certain follower don't have the channels cut into the follower to get past the dimples.

The dimples cannot be put back, but they will not prevent you from limiting your gun to 4 shells again. Remove the extension and install the magazine cap again.

The only difference, if you want to use a magazine spring retainer, is that - post modification - you'll use one of these instead of one of these.

You may need more than that. You will also need an old style magazine cap and a barrel that has a ball detent on the front of the ring that fits over the magazine tube.

So let me get this straight, If I want to remove the magazine extension and go back to factory 4+1, and I go back to using my factory spring retainer... the only difference from stock form is that every time I unscrew the magazine cap, the spring will come flying out instead of having been retained in factory form? Besides that I wont notice any mechanical difference?

Buy the spring clip that the other versions of the 870 use to retain the spring in the tube. Although it isn't ideal, you can use blue Loctite to secure the magazine cap if you don't want to have a gunsmith install a ball detent in the barrel lug and get an endcap that can engage the detent.

I had Casey at Tac-Ord install a detent in a barrel for me, however in the short term I found a rubber O-ring between the barrel and cap to work quite well. In fact if you use the o-ring and tighten the mag cap too much it will be very hard to remove.

I feel you're just worrying too much. The spring won't come flying out if you're aware that you have to hold it.

Also, the magazine cap will not have the ratchet effect when you screw it.

The spring lenght may not be the same with the standard capacity, but I doubt it will affect operation. Shells may need to be pushed harder to get in. If it annoys you get a new spring or cut the one you have.

No, the HD model comes from the factory with a mag extension.

The spring won't come flying out if you use one of these:
