Personally I think the common advise to choose stainless for wet conditions has become counter productive as the selling point of the stainless rifle has come to mean that the rifle does not require care when exposed to wet conditions. If a carbon steel rifle with a wood stock is well maintained, it is not degraded by exposure to wet conditions, but a stainless rifle that is not maintained will turn brown in short order, particularly if its exposed to a salt water environment. Stainless is not synonymous with maintenance free.

That may possibly be true with lesser makes of rifles, but whatever it is that Winchester calls stainless does not rust. And certainly not 'in short order'.

That has not proven true here. They eventually all turn brown, Winchester included, if not properly cared for. I'm talking here about the guys that leave them in the bottom of boats or similar treatment, and never bother to provide any care for them. If a rifle or shotgun gets a daily wipe down and a rub with an oily rag, it matter little if its stainless or blue steel, it won't rust.

Wanna take the pepsi challenge?

I have a take-off Winchester Classic SS barrel I will send you at my cost if you promise to put it outside, not take care of it, and take and post pics of it turning brown in a short time.

I'm talking about the guys who think they can leave their guns exposed to rain and sea water for an entire season, or get put away wet in a gun case until the next time out.

oh, I thought you said 'in short order'

my mistake.

Super Grade for me; I like nice wood.

x2, gotta love the Super Grade!

I hate these type of decisions because the M70 is my favorite rifle. In short I like the FWT in Stainless for rugged good looks but if I was pushed to the edge I would just as happily choose the Super Grade because I like wood and blue but then if all weather ruggedness was my primary concern I would choose the Extreme Weather.
For someone on a budget the Standar Grade is one heck of a deal.

I have the Coyote Light in .308.

I'm very happy with it.

But, since it wasn't one of your choices... Extreme Weather (or Supergrade)
