After the eighty yard post I said I would upgrade my targets and do a 100 yard range report. Two of the shots didn't stand out on the black background so I edited the photo to show were they landed. Would you say this is 3 MOA? or worse?

I shot my expensive hunting ammo at this target. Not any better I would say. Both targets have five of five shots on them. The fifth shot is just barely on the lower left the the sheet of eight and a half by eleven paper.

Nothing wrong with that. You might want to try commercial loads to see if it improves a bit more.

The second target is with commercial soft point ammunition. It cost me $26.00 for a box of twenty. :HR: I guess they saw me coming at that gun show.

The groupings didn't seem any better with the commercial ammunition over the army surplus.

Not enough holes to give a good measure of accuracy. A 6" group at 100 yards is passable in the army, that should be about 18" at 300, so all your shots are on target, maximum possible score.
Not ideal for general hunting, but it is a surplus Cold War item.
I don't think you got ripped off, your shooting looks good.

The top group looks about 5" and the second group looks to be 4". That's about normal for every unmodified SKS i've ever shot. Now if you really want to get discouraged try shooting at 200m.

My chinese sks puts out 3 to 4 inch groups with iron sights and surplus ammo. I am going to get a Russian one sometime and see which one I shoot better but aslong as it stays around the 4 inch groups I am happy.

I also noticed the accuracy of my shots got worse after more and more shots were taken. It was a very warm day and the barrel became too hot to touch. I would take five shots and walk to the target and check the damage so that should have been enough time to cool down a little. I also swear I could hear a difference in sound between the surplus ammo and the commercial stuff as well. I forgot my earplugs so I had my ears stuffed with leaves so that could have been part of the problem. lol :)

I own 3 Russian SKS and 4 or 5 inchs was the norm until i bought a batch of MFS 125 gr SP at 11.00 for 20 rounds, this ammo shrunk the group of my 3 SKS to 2 to 3 inchs, non corrosive an new production , could even use it for hunting since it is a SP, give it a try that the only ammo i shoot now and i loved it... Cheers. JP.

That's standard grouping for an unmodified SKS, you can improve it a bit with trigger work, removing the bayo, and glass bedding if you want. If you're looking for sub-MOA groups(three shots less than an inch at 100 yards) then your least expensive route is a Savage bolt action rifle with Accustock and Accutrigger, in a lower recoil calibre that won't cause you to flinch. SKS's are for fun, shooting a paper dinner plate at 100 yards, not for precision shooting! :)

Since I didn't see anything about it in the 80 yard thread or this one, might I ask what kind of shooting postion you were using along with what kind of support (if any). It doesn't seem from the made up targets that you were shooting at a club, where heavy benches and rests could be assumed to be the norm. Similarly, you could tell alot more from these five round groups than the 25 rounds you shot on a single sheet in the earlier thread, mainly since you'd want to avoid as much as possible from moving the rifle or your hold/grip/cheekweld of it through an entire group. That's practically impossible with five reloads!

While I don't want to claim spectacular accuracy with these rifles, which can also vary widely from specimen to specimen, I'd suggest that a very snugly supported rifle, zeroed in and fired slowly, should tighten up those groups. From my own experience, your groups look alot like what I'd get shooting the rifle from sitting (butt on the ground, elbows on the knees) either unsupported or with a shooting stick at 100m. If I take my time, I'd get all of my standing shots on the paper at 100m, which is still ample range for bush hunting.

At 200m shooting from a bench, I find it hard enough to get between three and four shots out of five on target, though the sights certainly make it hard enough to see the target at that distance. While I'd use other rifles for hunting at that distance, the SKS should be fine for offhand shooting out to 100m. I doubt most people would shoot much differently with a 30.30 levergun, which is essentially what the SKS is replacing.

Cheers,

Frank

I have a couple hundred acres of bush and at the back on one of them is a small stream and an opening where I do my shooting. I shot the sks prone on a mound of earth. No sand bags and with black flies and deer flies bugging me.

I must'a got real lucky. Mine did a nice 2 inch 7 shot group at 100 yards. No where near the POA but i've adjusted the sighs some. Hopfully gonna put a few holes in a black bear this fall with it before i go off to school

Targets!

You don't need a better rifle, you NEED better, more visible targets.

http://www.gamecalls.net/free_stuff/52_free_targets.html

Get a good 6" BLACK round dot and paste it at 100 meters. Aim at six o'clock.
That's all.
Good shooting!
PP. :)
