.270 .308. 3006

I have killed deer, sheep, caribou, moose, and bear with 130 gr cup and core bullets in several different 270s over the years. In fact, I think I have had more one-shot kills with that cartridge and bullet weight than any other cartridge.

Having said that, the 308 and 30-06 are great cartridges that will certainly do the job, too.

The 270 is one of the more popular calibers over the years, but until I purchased the Husqvarna 3000 from you, it's a caliber I've never owned or used. The one from you filled that void and it doesn't rain but it pours. I've recently acquired a Sako with full wood that belonged to a friend and former workmate. His eyes are such now that he's unable to use it any longer, so, my former 270 defeciency has been erased. I now have two.

I have a Remington 700 sps tactical in .308 stuck in some mail room at canada post. I bought this one because my pump action Remington GameMaster in .30/06 gets four inch groups at 100 yards. I'm hoping for one inch groups with the Remington 700 with match ammunition..

My only problem with 270 is that it's a long action cartridge. I'd go for a 308 personally, you have better bullet selection and similar ballistics. Accuracy for either cartridge is fine, and cost is about the same IIRC. I know I've said this before, but I really don't want a bolt so long and wobbly that it feels like I'm mashing potatoes in the field. I also like to have more than one scope position, without having to bolt a rail to my action. Your mag cap usually goes down by 1 when you go 30/06 or 270 vs 308, and there's a potential accuracy loss when you have long action vs short.

If I were the fairy man I'd get 7mm-08, but I seem to be able to handle the 308 well enough.

Meh. I used to think that way about long actions, but now realize it was a tempest in a tea pot. These little differences don't matter that much. Most modern rifle bolts are slicker than goose dung.

I think the .270 is a lovely middle ground of flat shooting, lighter bullets with nice SD and hard enough punch to kill an elk with aplomb. It delivers advantages that people claim for the 6.5 mm, 7 mm magnum and the .30-06 all in one. Nice cartridge.

Ya best be getting that thing checked out pal, cause 760/7600s are usually very accurate(on par with some of the bolt guns out there);)

Well, I've shot a couple of deer from my hay-loft using my 760 and they have been one shot one kill from 100+ yards. I'm sure if I spent more time practicing with my .30/06 I would be able to shrink my groups to maybe 2-3 inches. :)

Of the three you list in your first thread on gunnutz the 270 would be # 3 by a country mile in my world having shot all three extensively.

270 win is the most overrated cartridge...period.

308 is one of the most underrated cartridges...period.

As an all rounder nothing is close to the 30-06...period.

Ahead of the 270...280, 7-08, 6.5x55, 260 rem all offer similar or better performance with similar or less recoil.
