Well it was my 24th birthday last week and been just about 3 years since I married the love of my life. My father in law loves me for several reasons. 1st, I love and respect his eldest of 2 daughters and would do anything to protect her. 2nd, I am the son he never had :D I love guns, I love talking about guns, but most importantly I love LEARNING about guns!

I was over there for dinner tonight and was given a belated birthday gift. I big brown box and 1 small brown envelop that was slightly bulging... :D

I was prompted to open the little brown envelope first as it was my "Card"

I did so and reveled this...

Then I got to open the BIG box!
After getting through the tape and paper stuffing I was jaw dropped to find a cool piece of history!

I love the fact that my "card" is also "interactive" with my gift! :D

If i date your wife's sister do i get guns?

P.s. Don't tell my wife.

Probably, she is younger (20) and is quite cute  But wouldn't be like pimping her out? :(

And he does have his 12.6 license too.... so who knows whats coming out of the safe down the road... :D (actually he is "forcing" me to get my RPAL so I can be given some pistols soon... man its a rough life! :p )

You have my word as well, not a word to your wife. ;)

Don't shoot .308 factory in it. These guns were originally 7mm mauser, and though safe for a 48kpsi 7.62x51, a hotrodded 58kpsi .308 will probably make you eat the bolt. I have one of these too, in just as excellent conditon. Neat little gun. Not a long rifle, not quite a carbine either.

You guys only get a pic of one of the daughters, the one I have permission from to post pictures of. MY WIFE! So hands OFF!

& Mwjones- I was told when given it that 308 rounds were ok as long as I avoided the higher pressure of the higher end .308 manufactured offerings. Something I should talk to my local guys about?

im 19, 20 this year send her my way :D

Congrats on your birthday present, and on lucking out with the in-laws!

I was in a relationship like that once.... The father was great, and we got along really well, it just didn't work out with the daughter.

I still think longingly of the vault with (among many others) a ww1 1911, Ljungman, MAS 36, Enfields, Mosins... *sigh* I should stop now...

he's got a canoe for sale and a few jeeps and a nice 98 Cadillac, but a safe FULL of guns that he got from his father who was an forward artillery quartermaster. So lots of goodies :D

Keep her. I've been after my wife for years to buy me anything firearms related to no avail. I think I ruined guns for her by begging her to shoot an AK FA in Cambodia. At least she indulges my other hobbies...car parts, travel, beer. I have a good wife.

Nice gun, btw!

Hope you enjoy and can get out and shoot it and not just lock it up in a safe somewhere.

Guns were designed to be used, not just sit in the safe. ;) It will be exercised. Just need to know what can and can't be used it it. Any one have some info on that? I was told when given it that I can use the lower end .308 offerings and avoid the premium ammo, then someone in this thread says don't use it at all. Help?

i have fired canadian 7.62x51 milsurp in mine with no problems. I can't bring myself to shoot factory .308 in it though.

I remember seeing an article about when these guns were originally imported, and the testing done. APPARENTLY they survived up to 90kpsi before suffering critical failure. However, I don't recall if these were single shots, or strings. The reciever steel is supposed to be relatively soft, and the recesses that the bolt lugs sit in can become stretched, leadign to "bolt setback" ie horribly loose headspace. I'll see if i can find it.

Don't listen to anyone that tells you that they won't handle 7.62 nato rounds. The guys that did these conversions back in the day weren't bubbas, they were armourers that knew what they were doing. There are scores of articles, forum posts, etc, that will tell you they were made to fire some wierd 7.62 CETME round, an aluminum projectiled space aged (for the 50s) round.

Just don't use the .308 that's super-loaded to magnum-esque levels....:yingyang:....hey, if that rifle was the based on the ("post") 98 Mauser design ;) , I'd say feed it whatever you darn well pleased........but yours was ("at least") designed to shoot 7.62x51mm NATO anyhow, so just find a loading that hasn't been pushed beyond what the factory .308 was originally intended to be in the first place, and you ought to be very fine !...

It's still a very sweet-looking firearm!
