Hey all. I live in southern ontario were I have a bow and controlled muzzleloader season. For years I was under the impression I could apply for the antlerless draw and if drawn my antlered/antlerless tag would be good for both seasons if I were to enter the controlled hunt. This year in the regs it states that only the antlered portion is valid in my area wmu 92. I called the ministry number and they fed me a line of bull#### saying I can get a second buck tag for the controlled I know that is wrong typical ministry don't know ####. But I called my local mrn licensing office and they said I've bever been allowed to use my antlerless seal during the controlled hunt.

My question is does anyone in wmu 89-94 have a tag from previous years that says bow only? No where in last years reg book does it indicate I couldn't use my original antlerless tag during the controlled hunt. They allow me to buy additional antlerless tags for this controlled hunt.
Any help clearing this up would be great. If the law has changed then to us meat hunters we lost a chance at a taking a doe with a front stuffer. The table I refer to is page 64 of the current regs. It is on the far left side

Applying for an antless tag has nothing to do with applying to hunt in a controlled WMU. They are 2 diiferent draws. So if your WMU is a controlled area for the reqular season, then your anterless tag will only be valid for the bow season in your WMU. You cannot have 2 tags for the reqular season. You can purchase additional bow tags which may be buck only in your area.
If your WMU is a reagular hunt WMU (rifle) then your anterless tag is part of your license for that season, but can be used for the bow season as well. You still don't get 2 tags for the rifle season. I think some WMU's may get have Extra tags that can be purchased.

On the tag it does not state that. The confusion arises if I only buy my first tag and draw an antlerless portion. 1 tag either buck or doe that is the tag used for both seasons. If I use it in the bow season I can't hunt the controlled. Years before this one it never said it wasn't valid for antlerless. So I've used it on a doe as the tag states antlered or antlerless. I always purchase all extra tags I can and save my only buck tag for a nice buck. The last 2 years I've used it on someones elses buck tho. Thanks

You need to read the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary. Read the Apply for Anterless deer validation tag section. The first paragraph states it is not for controlled hunts. Then if you read the second page were it lists the WMU #'s, all areas marked with an * states that is is only valid for bow season.

If you apply for an anterless tag by the deadline( June 30th I think). That will let you apply for a doe tag in one of the two following situations.
1) it allows you to hunt does/fawns in a WMU that is not considered "Controlled" with a rifle during the permitted season.
2) it allows you to hunt does/fawns in a WMU that is "Controlled" with a bow during bow season.

And you are correct, it will say it is valid for anterless in the WMU that you applied to. It does not state anything about being used for a WMU "controlled" hunt ( which is a one week Shotgun, Muzzle loader, bow season)

If you want to hunt a WMU "Controlled"hunt, you must apply seperately for that by the end of August. This is a seperate sticker that you must carry along with your seal (attaches to animal) and license. It will say on it" For antlered or anterless controlled hunt in WMU 92. This makes your seal valid during the one week "controlled" hunt. (there can be up to 3 different one week controlled hunts in some WMU's).

You can party hunt if you used your seal during the bow hunt as long as you have valid licenses Controlled Hunt validation stickers and unused seals. So if you have 2 seals left and 4 guys, you can still hunt for 2 deer, even though you used your seal during the bow hunt.

No you can buy additonal tags for Archery season. And each tag comes with another seal. These are usually for bucks only. You can use this seal before your other seal (anterless) if you shoot a buck. That will leave you with a seal for your controlled hunt. But if you shoot a doe/fawn, you must use the seal with the anterless sticker. If that is your main seal for the controlled hunt, then you must use it.

Thank you very much. My area issues extra doe tags not buck tags. Wish it was the other way

Well if your putting it all in the freezer, does it matter? I guess if your hunting for a trophy, then an extra buck tag would be good. Sounds like they need to reduce the population quite a bit were you are.

Ummmm.......AFAIK, an antlerless tag CAN be used on a buck.

Antlerless: Need an antlerless tag.
Antlered: Need any tag, antlered or antlerless.

I don't want to sound like a ####, but in light of your interpretation of the fairly straightforward ON hunting regs, Perhaps some remedial training is in order?

Yes you can, if you apply for the controlled hunt... You don't get another tag (or game seal) for the controlled hunt - you get a 'Controlled Hunt Validation Tag'.

You misread....I was referring specifically to the "antlerless" endorsement.
You can carry your antlerless bow tag into the controlled hunt, but it does not mean you can use it for an antlerless deer. Understand?

Correct... and always has been like that..

That is not my understanding. The controlled hunt tag dedicates what you are allowed to hunt. Your first tag if it is a bow tag is good for a buck in all of ontario and is good in the controlled hunt if you are successful in the controlled draw. Your second tag if that is a bow tag is only good for a bow season only.

The most important point is the controlled hunt tag. That tells you want you can or can not hunt in the controlled hunt season. That is my understanding and what the MNR told me. I hunt in 79D which is a bow only season. I apply for my first tag and then buy a bow only tag in that area. I also plan to use my first tag in the controlled hunt in 79d. That area allows buck or does in the controlled hunt. I can use my bow tag (first tag) in the controlled hunt. I save my second tag which is bows only for the bow season. So a bow tag (first tag) can be used in the controlled hunt.

To clarify things.
You are given one seal when you purchase your license. You attached validation stickers to this seal if you are drawn for them in a given WMU for a certain season. This can be anterless for bow in bow only areas, or rifle in Northern Ontario WMU's. Or it can be for a controlled hunt season. You must follow the rules of the WMU you are hunting in for that specfic season.
Now 79D in not just a bow only WMU. It has a bow only season (which to hunt doe's, you need an anterless validation sticker), and a controlled hunt with shotgun/muzzle loaders (which requires a controlled hunt validation sticker). Then you can buy additional seals, which with allow you to hunt for bucks only during the bow season.
So the only seal allowed to be used during a controlled hunt is the original seal that was purchashed with your 2001 deer license. If you used your seal during the bow season, you are SOL for hunting the controlled hunt, unless you are party hunting and have valid seals within your group.
If you do not draw a validation sticker for a WMU controlled hunt, you cannot hunt that season period!

That is actually what I said. 79 always has additional bow tags and the controlled hunt always has 500 applicants and only like 200 apply. I always use the first tag for the controlled hunt and my second bow tag for bows. Always use the bow first and second my first tag last. Lots of tags in 79 for anterless. Just need to wait until the middle of july and will apply for that bow tag then I am ready to rock and roll. Then it will be time to check on the diy mineral plots and scout.
