Cutts Compensators & Poly-Chokes

They were before my time, but I realize that they were the state-of-the-art, must-have accessory of the day. I'm told they worked well.

My question is; were they considered as ugly then as they look now?;)

I think that most who tried them were satisfied with how they worked. Yes, they were considered ugly back then. And yes in most cases it reduces the value quite a bit if on a "collectable" shotgun that might otherwise have a higher value if it didn't have one installed.
 
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder but to me the Cutts compensators were not real ugly looking things; certainly more attractive than the poly chokes. If they did their job then theres no big issue with them. Some guns even look good with them on..IMHO

mmmh, a rem. 1100 26'' barrel with a cutts. definitely looks good.

Cutts also patterned amazingly well.
 
I kinda like the look of the Cutts and the extra weight on this old girl

I'm still waiting for a chance to try her out, but the extra weight seems like it will smooth out the swing on a 410 like that.

I LOVE 'em!
At one time I have a Wingmaster skeet, and two M12's with Cutts on them, the boyz were looking for a "Briggs and Stratton" patch for me - Ii would have worn it on my vest, too!!:D

100% correct. Many will pass on collectable shotguns now that had a cutts or poly fitted. I could never get comfortable with the big hunk of metal on the end of the barrel.

And that means that there can be excellent buys if you are looking for a shooter. A gun fitted with a dial-a-duck often sells for a fraction of what its unaltered brother will bring. Might be more useful, too.

Agree but I would shoot the gun 1st to make sure you are comfortable with it. For me after shooting a regular barrel all these years I cannot go back. That big hunk of metal keeps getting my eye and covering the bird effecting how well I shoot.
 
I went through the Cutts, Poly Choke phase years ago with everybody else. I had a deluxe version poly choke on my Win. SX-1. Worst piece of equipment I ever spent money on except for a Ford Pinto. We all do foolish things when we are young these were two of mine.

No amount of tweeking and reloading variations would get a decent long range pattern (40 yds) out of it. I cut it off with the hack saw one night, shortened the barrel up to 20", removed the vent rib, soldered on a set of Rem. rifle sights (there all steel). And polished and reblued the whole barrel. Works very well for deer with slugs.
I put a new 28" mod barrel on the SX. I still have the SX and it works well. The reminants of the poly choke are still in my parts bin, if you want it I'll send it to you after the mail strike is over.

Interesting, my experience has been the opposite with bith thew Poly choke and cutts.
The guy I sold the 870 skeet to has used it every year for ducks and ruffed grouse, and has taken some very long birds with it.
With my M12, at a fun shoot one year we were shootig trap from the skeet sations, I had three hard right hand targets in a row one, from from staion 6 and and two from staion seven , and crushed all three!:)
