Question, is a 9mm german luger right from the war considered restricted or prohibited? I figured it was based on the 105mm barrel length, but as it's not mine, I haven't been able to confirm the barrel length on it.

If it came right from the war, was never registered before, is there any way to register it now?

Thanks.

Prohibited due to the barrel length. No new registrations of prohibited firearms. You can inherit one from a close family member though.

Perhaps those old boys that brought home those evil-baby killing-short barelled war trophys learned a thing or two about the importance of having a gun that no one knew about and hence the non-registration.
Maybe there is a lesson to be learned there - just saying :yingyang:

you can get a 12/7 designation and register it in your name if it came down a family line. If asked, just tell them that you don't know why Grandad never registered it but you have it now and wish to get 12/7 added to your RPAL. For everyone's sake "old grandad" had better have passed on so the RCMP can't go after him for firearms offences. my .02 :)

If it has never been registered before, it can never be registered. There is zero provision for new prohibs entering the system.
Yes he can get a 12-7 Grandfather clause for a pistol manufactured before 1946, but that pistol MUST have been registered in the past.
Absolutely heartbreaking, but true, sorry to say.

Keep it below the radar, once the RCMP knows you have it, they will come for it when you are old and take it to the smelter.

With the knowledge of so many P08s going this route in the near future, the ones that remain must be saved at all costs.

The Luger was the single most popular battlefield souvenir in both World Wars. There are a lot of them around.

Unfortunately, there are also a lot of them in the registry, so when the Lieberals were looking to ban something, they became a convenient target. Nearly all of them were made with barrels 4 INCHES in length, which is 102mm. This was a standard barrel length in North America AND Europe for many years. This is why the barrel limit on "short handguns" was set at a hundred and FIVE millimetres: to destroy as many as possible. Remember, Tovarishch, we live in a FREE country, which means that only the GOVERNMENT should be armed. We all know how well THAT has worked out in history; just ask the Jews, Ukrainians, Armenians, Kurds et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseam.

The ironic thing is that a standard Luger with a 4-inch barrel is exactly the same length as an M1911A1 Colt, which has a FIVE-inch barrel....... and you can chop almost 7/8 of an inch off the Colt and still be legal! A Luger is a big, bulky gun, not very concealable at all, yet this was done under the guise of preventing criminals from carrying concealable weapons.

Sometimes I really think that our laws are designed by conscious sadists with a really twisted sense of humour. "Let's see how many people we can hurt today, and still have the media parrot the Party Line!"

At least, that's what it seems like, sometimes.

Our 'laws' are created by stupid, no conniving politicians that follow the recommendations of bureaucrats with their own personal or someone else's agendas. To wit, the bureaucrats that can come up with a means to accomplish the goal of destroying the most handguns (black rifles, FALs, etc - insert latest flavour of the day) wins the thanks and more of their political masters.

I reckon that it appears the pistol may have grown Artificial Intelligence or a Brain, with more Brains than the Lie-beral Party, and absolutely refuses to be known as just a number in a database, especially when his name is Mr. P08!

@ghostntheshell: really, I think. Best collection of restricteds and prohibs I ever saw was many years ago. There was not one single legal item in the collection: they were all confiscated and owned by a cop. And they wonder why sometimes people have trouble respecting them. "Caesar's wife must be above suspicion."

This is contrary to information that I received from the CFO here.
A unregistered prohib can be transferred, (sold, loaned or given) to a qualified licence holder. It can be entered into the system at the time of transfer. This I was told.
