So I tries for the first time shooting out past 500 yards today. I only got the chance to get to 700 but I must say doing so with a hunting rifle was fun. I am not at home an making this post from my iPhone so I will post pictures later. I managed to get 3 out of 9 rounds to hit a 18" tall by 12" gong. The three rounds are about 2.5" apart from each other. I know they are not the best groups but for never doing it before I think it is a great start.

Very very impressive if you were shooting at a dong:p:p:p I think it was a Gong you were shooting at:D:D Either way good job!
 
Here are the pictures. I fired 9 rounds total at the 700 round target with the .338. It took 6 rounds to get it on target. Once it was on I hit twice more. problem was the wind was pushing my bullet more than I thought it was.

I know the tagrets don't look like much but there was 3 of us shooting with 3 different cals.
 
Flinging lead downrange is never a bad day. Hitting a steel plate with a 7mm-08 at 700 yds and a 338wm at 700 yds, soon to be farther. With a hunting style rifle is a good time. You'll soon find out this long range stuff is addictive.
I've learned a few thing though, tire chain is very brittle, 338wm goes through 3/8" plate. I need to wire the chain together as well as the hook in the chain. Wind can fluctuate from 5mph to 25 mph in seconds. In long range shooting you never stop learning. I will bring up a couple of pics. You should see what those bee keepers dropped off.

Sorry for shooting through the plate, and the chain..... it was fun though.
 
No worries! Picture that plate after 20 people have hit it, with 5 - 10 rounds. It will probably have a dish in it. I had some plates that looked like spoons. It will soon be somewhat flat again, grind, weld, grind.(holes welded smooth again)
Another gusting to 25km wind day today.

Well I decided to buy a nightforce to put on it until I get a rifle built. So off to get a nightforce tomorrow.
 
I cut apart 2 sets of dually tire chains(5 hours) and I can weld them to my targets. I don't have rubber welding rod. tehehe. The heavier targets will have 3 chains on them from here on.
