Hi everyone,
I just purchased my 1st 1911 .45 I haven't bought any ammo yet, but I am already thinking about reloading.

I reload 9mm and have a tonne of small pistol primers and HS-6 (which my hornady book has a .45 recipe for)

My question is: Is there a good 45 round that I can buy that uses a small pistol primer? (and I will not even try to hide my ignorance . . . If 45's only come in small primer, please don't raz me to much :)
 
I think you should invest in the proper large pistol primers. I have never heard of a small primer version of the .45 brass.

If they raze you then tell them about me. I didn't realize that 357 magnum was small pistol primered. I have been reloading since 1998. All set up. Tried to get that first primer to seat. Spent 5 minutes before I clued in.

As long as you learn something new each time you reload, you are doing it right.

Winchester makes factory loaded ammo now with small primers.
Think its in there "Winclean" ammo that has a total metal jacket and lead free primers.
If you want to blow the extra money on that "clean" stuff so you can get enough to start reloading, then go for it i guess.
I see lots on the range floor from time to time.
I have way too much of the large primer stuff to bother collecting and reloading the new type.
Mix up one of the smalls in your cases to be primed bucket, and you will learn some new words LOL
 
"..."Winclean" ammo..." Yep. Uses special small pistol primers. Winchester claims their NT ammo isn't reloadable, but that hasn't stopped anybody from doing it. I believe it really just means they don't sell the Winclean primers.
You don't want to mix Winclean brass with regular brass though.
"...already thinking about reloading..." Set of carbide dies with a taper crimping die and a shell holder is all you need. Other than bullets, brass and large pistol primers. Think cast bullets. Jacketed bullets are pricey to be shooting all the time. 230 grain RN's or FP's(Flat Point. RN with no rounded point, oddly enough.) work well.
 
When I buy useed brass, about 1 in 30 is a small primer. Not enough to load, so I throw them out.

In each caliber I have some dummy rounds with each bullet I use. These dummies are used for the initial set up of the bullet seater. My 45 ACP dummies are all small primer.

I suggest you buy the large pistol primers and use large hole 45acp brass.

I assume you can buy .45 ammo with small pistol (I am not talking from experience because I haven't bought factory in a long time, in fact haven't been to gun store in more than a year thanks to the EE) because I have picked up three different small primered .45 acp casings at our range with the following headstamps: Win NT, CCI and Blazer.

And hey, you can ask any question on this forum.
 
As people have told you, you can buy 45acp in small and large primer. I bought 500 win clean and they shot no different than the large primer rounds. When reloading them it was a little more time consuming, because of the small primer. The tended to be a bit fussy if they weren't lined up perfectly. I saved all my small primer stuff and sold it to someone who only uses small primer 45acp. Its a pain switching the primer feed tube sizes back and forth. Nobody steals his brass, cause its a pain when it gets mixed up in the press. In fact they make sure they didn't have any of his brass. He mentioned he comes home with all his brass.
