Which stainless/synthetic hunting rifle?

Of your choices I'd go with the M70 first and the RUger second. (Ruger rifles are very accurate, so dont' worry about that) I wouldn't even consider a Tikka T3....

Since you seem to be leaning towards the Model 70, I think you will be happy. Excellent rifle and if I was buying a general purpose hunting rifle today that would definitely be a top pick.
 
I was looking at both the M70EW and the X-bolt SS. I went for the X-bolt because it felt good to hold and I liked the Rubber feel. Also had a xtr M-70 with the floor plate and this time wanted a mag. Also really liked the push button bolt release with the safty on. The other thing the X-bolt has over the M-70 is bolt throw. 60' with the X-bolt. Go with what feels best in your hands and you'll be happy.

Good luck... my experiences with WSS here at least is that they never have anything I want in stock.

For the price range you're looking at, I would consider a Sako A7 or Tikka T3 as well. Cant go wrong with the Savage 16FCSS either.

Hard when there's so many good rifles to choose from :D
 
They probably won't have an X-bolt or M70 S/S in 7mm RM in stock at WSS, but hopefully they will at least have both rifles in a different chambering just so I can do a side by side comparison between them, I have handled the X-bolt before and I really liked it, but haven't had a chance to shoulder the M70. Hope to go to WSS tomorrow.
 
M70 it is, I had the chance to handle it at WSS in Nanaimo, and though I still like the X-Bolt, the Model 70 just felt better(for me) when I shouldered it. Though as I had already guessed, they don't have one in 7mm RM either, so I have already called Clay at Prophet River to see about him getting me one in on order. Think I'm going to get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 with the rapid Z 600 reticle from him too and throw that on it. Any suggestions for rings/bases?
 
So, getting back to the OP's first comment about Ruger accuracy..... Who actually owns a Ruger M77, has actually fired it at a target for the purpose of determining accuracy, and can actually attest to the fact that it is, or is not, an accurate rifle?

Not me, this is just what I've heard echoed before. In fact they look like quite nice, well built rifles.
 
Just so you are aware, the Vanguard is built on the Howa 1500 action, so both the Vanguard and Howa are basically the same rifle.

Having owned two Ruger 77s, neither was as accurate as either my Remington 700s, or my Howa 1500s. From what I have seen, Ruger accuracy, has been hit or miss.
 
I have a Ruger M77 Mark II all weather in 223. It has the synthetic stock and a 1:12 twist barrel. There is no problem with its accuracy, and it will shoot factory Winchester 45 grain ammo quite well. It's not quite minute of angle with that ammo, but its close. Certainly fine for a hunting rifle. Trigger was heavy, and needed some work to get it to my liking. That's my sole experience with Ruger centre fire rifles. My Uncle has an M77 in 223 as well, and he shoots it a lot and has no complaints about its accuracy. That was enough to recommend it to me.

Ruger Hawkeye AW .280 shooting 140gr TTSX at 200 yards. I don't need anything more from a hunting rifle...

I have. Lots of them. Sub MOA groups with good ammo and good shooting technique. All the time. No worries for RUger accuracy.
 
Well, I finally found an M70 Extreme Weather in 7mm RM in stock at Cabelas(last one) so I bought it, hope it gets here soon. Now to get a scope, rings, bases, 7mm RM die set, case trimmer, brass, magnum primers, powder, bullets, cleaning rod, brush, jags, etc...Man, hunting season can't get here soon enough. Speaking of which, anyone have any recommendations for a good hunting bullet for this gun?
