If you were going to choose two blr 81's in the same calibre, one to scope, and one to leave open sighted. Which of the two would you choose, and why? you would be hunting deer, moose, and black bear.

Dave.

6 of one half dozen of the other.

.308, bit more oomph close in, 7mm-08 better down range due to better BC bullets.

Besides, those differences are even marginal.7mm-08 is a bit less likely to bite you with the scope.

buy one and stick Talley Mounts on it. Repeatability allows you to remove and replace your scope with the confidence that it will return to zero. Flexibility allows you to carry more than one pre-sighted scope for your firearm, and also provides ease of removal for your scopes during the rough travel.

I would go with the 308 simply because of the availability of ammo. Most times you can get it at walmart and canadian tire if you are not able to make it to a hobby shop... or if you live somewhere where there aren't any hobby shops. That's half the reason I shoot a 30-06. I have a BLR in .257 Roberts and I almost bought one in .308 last year when I got my lefty bolt 30-06... I hate that I have to get a friend with equipment to re-load ammo for the .257 9 times outta 10 just to shoot at the range.

which of the 2 calibers do you shoot better? I'd go with that one if ammo availability isn't a prob for you since both will take all said game animals as long as you do your part.

Same/Same...whatever is in stock.

If I was buying a BLR it would be a .358 win...:)

Never saw the use for a 7mm-08 a 308 is all you need for all hunts except dangerous game... JP.

The sights on a BLR are crappy and hard to use. Therefore, I'd just buy one and put a VXII 1x4 on it and have the best of both worlds.

A 308 would be easier to buy ammo for and easier to find a rifle in that chambering.

flip a coin, or get both, I did, love 'em both. also got a 358, all Leupold scoped. (old eyes). If you are only scoping one, do the 7mm-08.

I shoot, reload for & have rifles in both 7mm-08 and .308.... currently don't own any BLR's. But I've had 3 at different times in the past, all were in .308 Win. That's likely what I'd still go for now.

If you have a variable scope that goes low enough, you don't need iron sights.

I would only go the 7mm-08 route if you plan on reloading. Otherwise, either calibre is perfectly fine for what you require.

.308 brass can easily be formed into 7mm-08 brass and there are plenty of bullets available for anything, for which you would possibly want to use a BLR in 7mm-08.

I find it interesting that so many responses make it sound like the 7-08 is a handloaders cartridge only? There are lots of factory choices and ammo is not hard to find, in Ontario at least. Every gun shop I stop at has some in stock. Walmart and Canadian Tire may not stock it, but not sure that would influence me?

I don't see anything wrong with your thinking on the two gun setup. There was an older fellow around these parts that had a similar setup, only he had two Model 760 pumps in 300sav, one scoped and one without. Not many deer got by him!

I did the same sort of thing years ago, one scoped, one with open sights. But I always seemed to find myself in the wrong place with the wrong gun. Like has been said, buy a .308 and put a good quality variable scope 1.5x- 5x or so on it, mounted low and you're done.

Most reasonably well-stocked gunshops will have 7mm-08, but you will likely end up paying several dollars more per box more than for .308 ammo. For this reason, I think that those using factory ammo should stick to one of the following four cartridges:

-.243
-.270
-.308
-.30-06

7mm-08 looks like a nice cartridge to me, but I think any advantages over the .308 are really splitting hairs when you consider the typical price difference for ammunition.

The 308 would be my choice.
On the note, I am looking for a 7-08 for myself. But then I have a 308 already.
Is this a continuation from your previous thread on what would guys choose?
What a choice to be faced with!
257 Roberts.
