A buddy asked me to see if any of you more knowledgable folks could give me a ballpark idea of value. He has a take-down Savage in .303 Savage calibre. I believe it to be a "deluxe" variant, due to the checkering and schnabel fore stock. I know the cartridge is obsolete and this affects the value, bur from the pics he had on his phone, it looks to be in beautiful shape. My field is more military arms, so I'd just be guessing at the value and I'd like to give him more accurate information. Thanks in advance.

Many Savage models came checkered and with schnabel fore stock as standard. You would really have to post good photos for any kind of intelligent appraisal of the rifle. The takedown feature adds to collectablity but for collectors, condition is paramount, same as military weapons. A Savage takedown in .303 chambering with no special order features in 80% condition might fetch $700-$800 from the right guy if the takedown is still tight.
About $350-400 in very good condition!
Take-Downs in 1899 Sav is probably 1/4 the prduction, so very little premimun for that. Schnabel fore stocks is also the norm, no premium for that, detract some $$ because it's in the least desired .303S caliber. The only thing of interest might be the checkering, if it's original it might give it some extra value. Lots of "bubba" checkering on old guns thou. If it's original checkering a "Deluxe" should also have a pistol grip? If it's in beautiful shape, hard to tell from a phone pic & a verified Deluxe?? it might be worth up to $5-600.

Unless a 303 sav has something special it will not be overally valuable. If it is original take down checkered probably a 20's - 40's 99G. Condition is king. Top condition G in 303 maybe $800. If there is anything done that makes it only a shooter and not a collector $350 tops (but not from me $200 - $250 tops).
Cased sets were sold in 300 sav, although the parts could be bought separately. The 303 sav was a 22" barrel and the standard cases were made for a 24" barrel. The 410 barrel alone is more expensive than the prices mentioned here. The last cased set I saw sell at Landsborough Auctions went for over $2,000 including taxes and buyers premiums. Most sell between $1,500 - $3,000 depending on condition.
That reminds me I have to go and pick up a 410 barrel at the mail today!
