Sks decosmolied...firing pin retaining pin stuck

So I spent 2 hours today getting rid of a metric tonne of cosmoline. When I got to the bolt I tried to punch the firing pin retaining pin out as instructed. I spent an hour trying to punch the bloody thing out - and in the end, the bolt won. The punch broke.

At this point I'm going to just soak it in mineral spirits over night to ensure firing pin moves freely.

I wonder if putting it in the freezer would cause the metal to retract enough to punch it out?

Thoughts?

The pin moves freely now - but I want to be sure.
 
you could warm it or freeze it my suggestion would be a thicker punch and a bigger hammer. you really need to swing hard I used a 2.5 pound ball peen and I had to really hit it to get it moving
 
Use a bigger hammer rather than swinging harder, less chance of breaking s**t. Try to use the biggest punch that will fit through the bore and support the bolt with something soft like wood. Make sure there is room for the pin to slide out underneath

I used a 1/8th inch punch. Pretty good fit. Used the wood to support. Left room for pin to come out. Broke punch.

I suppose I'll buy another punch as see about a different hammer!
 
Soaking it overnight is a good idea. I might use gas, but mineral spirits should be OK.

If that doesn't work, get some Knock 'er Loose or Liquid Wrench and let that soak in. That ought to make the retaining pin easier to remove.
 
I use a good steel pointing punch that's been blunted with a grinder. These things are much, much harder and tougher than nails, you'll pay more than a dollar from Princess Auto for one though.

Then I hold the punch with a pair of pliers.

Then you secure the bolt on a good vice that has a relief for the pin out the back end.

The rest = WAILING ON IT LIKE AN ENRAGED MADMAN.
 
Try just slowly pouring boiling water from the kettle over/through it, this should get rid of any cosmoline. Just oil it after and it should be good to go.
 
Soak in Kroil oil over night. Then juice it full of brake cleaner all up in the firing fin channel. Then take a small 4lbs sledge hammer with a nice punch and give it a wack.
 
I agree with Satain, if that doesn't do it, nothing will! Mine came out
smoothly with a tap or two from a regular hammer, after hitting it with
penetrating oil and letting it soak for awhile.
 
I find that I have to boil the bolt for a few minutes sometimes.

It has worked on 5 different bolt blocks that previously could not be taken apart.
