This has probably been asked a million times but....will an Express 3 inch chamber 870 barrel fit a wingmaster 2 3/4 receiver? Also what is involved in modifying that receiver to shoot 3 inch magnums?

Thanks

Dave

The barrel will fit but you can still only shoot 2 3/4-inch shells.

Now you can change chokes though, and all you need for ducks is 2 3/4 anyway.

The only issue is that 870s originally built as 2-3/4" guns have an ejector that sits further forward than the 3" one. Changing the ejector will allow 3" shells to clear the ejection port.

Is there a kit or part I will need to modify it? I live 2.5 hours from the nearest gunsmith so anything I can do myself is a plus.

Besides a new ejector, you need the rivet cutter and staking tools set from Brownells, as well as a drill press:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=2795/pid=653/Product/REM__870_RIVET_STAKING_TOOL_SET

You might be able to re-peen the old rivets and preserve the original finish on the exterior of the receiver. If not, new rivets will be required, which will show unless the receiver is refinished with the new ejector riveted in place. I personally wouldn't bother with refinishing if new rivets are required, given the expense of doing it properly.

In addition, if you use an Express barrel, it doesn't have a ball detent on the barrel lug to retain the magazine cap. Depending on how much effort you want to put into the project, you could drill the hole for the detent and stake it in place, or just use blue (not red!) Loctite to keep the cap in place.

If it is only riveted on its no problem. We have every type of solid rivet known to exist at work (Aerospace) as well as every type of riveting tool. Heck I could put Titanium rivets in there if I wanted :)

Thanks for the info.

You may have every type but you won't have these they are a step rivet with 3 different diameters.

3 steps? Do you have a pic or a link? Or some dimensions?

The reason I ask is I could use three different diameter monel rivets inside of each other no problem. Just drill each one and insert it in the next one etc. Once they are driven they will become 1 rivet essentially.

I may be jumping the gun (literally) as this old Brinks security Wingmaster may have a 3 inch ejector already.

Thanks for all the info so far.
