I have recently acquired back a very limited run first year production LH Model 70 in 338 Win Mag and have thrown some Williams 3 piece milled steel bottom metal I had on it. I was going to carry on with it as is, but I have noticed a hairline crack in the stock running from the lug recess through the guard screw hole and on through to the mag well. Now I could fix it and still might, but in the meantime I have a Bansner coming from a friend that should show up any day. Originally once the funds filled the fun account I was intending on stocking it in an Echols fiberglass McMillan (see link).

Which route should I end up going with on this rifle? Or I guess what route would you go?

You can save some bucks and have a fine laminate beautify this ol beauty. Suggest you look at Boyds stocks for comparison. Solid, well made, drop in ready, what more do you need? Now if spending bucks is your game by all means. I'd use the surplus for ammo.

Alternately, placing cross pins in the recoil lug and guard lug should tame this mag. Then devcon bed it to help solidify things. It is a nice piece of wood worth keeping around.

Echols...

I will be getting a McMillan for my M70 sometime this fall/winter. What does an Echols in EDGE cost to your door?

I bought a Model 70 SS Classic a few years ago and made the following modifications:

- Pacnor #4 SS super match grade barrel, with a sporter contour, a target crown cut to 26".
- Williams SS one piece bottom metal.
- Willilams LA extractor
- Action was blueprinted
- Trigger is set to 3lbs
- The tupperware factory stock was replace with a Macmillan, Hunter stock in fiberglass.

If I was to do it again I would probably:
- may get the barrel cut to 24".
- maybe a #3 weight SS super match grade...maybe not

The rifle as it sits is pretty handy, very accurate, and gets used a lot.

The Echol stock looks pretty nice and is about what I paid for the Macmillan, although I think the carbon fiber would be nice to get.

That rifle needs a McMillan in the late Supergrade pattern....and a stainless Shilen in 7 Mashburn......:)
see stock pattern below...;)

Dirty Bird! That is a good looking rifle and a cool old cartridge.
I like that stock. Had one, sold the rifle to a young kid starting out. Now I need another one.....

I'd think about that Supergrade Chuck, you've got enough of the other type.

This one is not a 7 Mashburn, it's a 308 Norma on a Pre'64 action.,...another CGN'er is contemplating a 7 Mashburn on a Model 70,...so I threw that out there....

The Mashburn for me is covered on another LH 70 action and an Echols EDGE, Williams bottom metal, Echols mag box and follower, Williams extractor, reamer and a Douglas #2 that is in the works and trying to make its way to Bill.
