Hey guys. I'd like to see some pics of extractor marks on brass, that's caused by high pressure. Have done some online searches, have come up with very little visual info.

Those marks come about from loads that are much too heavily loaded.
I have often built up loads in my rifles that went above the "maximum" loads shown in reloading books. But I have never increased loads until those extractor marks show up.
The brass has to actually flow, to fill into the extractor cavity. That type of over loading is usually caused by an error, such as wrong kind of powder, use of a much heavier bullet than called for, etc.

Extractor marks are pretty obvious... Look at your guns extractor then use your imagination to think of what the brass would look like it it were pressed against the bolt face with extreme pressure. PS you must have done a pretty half-assed search as I am not even going to post the pics I found in less than 10 seconds...
 
I not sure I'm using the correct terminology here. My question concerns marks or bright notches inside the extractor groove, and the relation (if any) to high pressures. I'll post pics later with what I'm getting with a M700 .223. Just wondering if there's anything to be concerned about.

I can't view many websites due to it being blocked off because of weapons rating, so I don't get to see those pics

If part of your case is going into the extractor groove, so as to make a "notch," presuming you mean "node," you are getting dangerously high pressure.

I have had similar marks with mediocre loads, but from Sako style extractors, not Remingtons...The Sako extractors can be sharp edged.
 
Well, that's just not normal. Unless you have some really out-of-dimension extractor, something with the load seems wrong. Are you reloading?
 
I have seen similar marks on my brass, but they were there from the get go, something that happened during manufacture. I just went downstairs and looked at my .270, 30-06 and 300WSM brass, all new, all winchester. There are similar marks on many of all 3 calibers. Are you sure they haven't always been there?

I tried to take some pictures, but with my crappy camera, the flash reflects too strong off the brass to see anything. The marks on your brass do look a little more pronounced than mine, but other than that they are in the same spot and the same shape.
 
I have noticed those type of marks on my as well, but, had them happen at varying charges/velocities.So I don't think they are pressure related so much as to inconsistencies in the brass, I'm not 100% sure, I have seen them on my 700's as well as others.

Now I am gonna go check my Lapua brass to see if it is the same as my R P.

Just looked through much of my brass, the Lapua has ZERO extractor marks on them.

The R P , maybe about 40%.

I think the Lapua has actually had more use also.

I am thinking it is nothing to worry about.
 
I have seen brass that varies in diameter a bit across the extractor goove, I noticed because some Federall wsm brass would not slide into the seat on my press. I would doubt that this is pressure related, you would need some seriously high pressures to expand a case head that much.

What is the dimension across the groove? You might want to compare it with brass that does not get the same mark.
 
Marks from the extractor, (in the extractor groove) such as posted above are likely not pressure related. Not impossible, but not likely. Looks more like the extractor is bouncing under recoil, and marking the case.
Ejector marks, on the other hand, are caused by brass flow into the bolt face area, usually makes for heavy bolt lift, and is most likely to be caused by high pressure.
It's pretty much always accompanied by very flat or even blown primers, and cratering around the firing pin, but there are tough primers out there.
