my first hunting shotgun! Pics Up!

I just picked up a Smith and Wesson 1000m in 12 gauge.
My first non-tactical, semi auto shotgun with a barrel longer than 20 inches.

pretty excited about it, even having read a few less than stellar reviews.

Anyone else have one of these? Good, bad, ugly? tips?
gas piston buffer looks good, not much melting, no dents in the assembly.
receiver has a little bit of surface rust, and stock has a few safe kisses.

28 inch barrel with fixed full choke. only holds 2 rounds in the tube? is this normal or is this one plugged?

The barrel is listed as 3'' chamber, so quick question, may be a little stupid, but can I safely run 2 3/4 through it? Every shotgun I've ever shot has both (or three) listed

Maybe one day I will hop on this picture posting bandwagon and get a few pictures of it up.

Yes if it is a 3" chamber you may run 2 3/4" shells through it. But don't shoot any steel shot through that Full Choke barrel....

TY win, now when I say the choke is full, it is written so on the barrel, but there is no physical choke in the end. same deal with the steel?

Ah yes there is a "physical Choke". It is built into the end of the Barrel and if it says FULL do not use Steel through it.
Steel is not like Lead it does not compress. If you want to shoot Steel out of your Gun you will have to get a Smith to open up the "Choke" to at least Mod. or more. I would suggest getting Choke tubes installed but it would probably cost more than the Gun is worth.

Thanks for the info Win, doubt I will get choke tubes installed (tubes was the word i was looking for when I said "physical")
Any idea what a smith opening it up would run?
I'd love to be able to run steel through it, just for $$ sake.

Here's the thing it might shoot 2 3/4" but that does not mean it will cycle them. If the gas piston is set for a 3" load sometimes the gas from a 2 3/4" doesn't have enough power to cycle the action.

This was the case with one of my dads Berettas that only had 3" carved into the barrel.

You will just have to test it out.

i plan to run some light loads through it tomorrow. I've heard they were good with light 2 3/4 to heavy 3 inch due to something in the gas system. only time/shooting will tell.

Thanks slick, I'm still pretty excited about it. I really had my heart set on an over-under, but for the price I paid for this one, the fact that it was smith and wesson (kinda) and semi, sealed it.

for the curious, the barrel says :
MODEL 1000 AUTO 12GA. 3 INCH CHAMBER
FULL
MFG IN JAPAN TO S&W SPEC
 
That gun definitely looks like its worth having it threaded for tubes. Sure is cheaper than a second gun.

took it out and shot it during lunch hour here.
23/25 clays including 5 sets of doubles. missed the first two, mostly due to them being the first 2 shots with the gun.

Won't be touching anything on this shotgun. Ran a box of winchester universal 2+3/4 #4 through it. No problem cycling the light loads, had one stovepipe early on, I think that was due to me not bracing/squaring up properly. Hardly any recoil, that semi auto action eats a lot of it up. The full choke lets it reach a LONG way out there after I purposely let a few get away from me. Cycles fast and solidly, doesn't feel like I am "waiting" for the next round to be chambered.
Shoulders easy, points with only a thought, why did S&W not sell more of these guns?
 
Nice semi! These were made by Howa in Japan and sold by Mossberg and Howa for a time after S&W dropped them. Very similar to the Remington 1100. If you need parts, Numrich bought the remaining parts for their inventory so you have the option of looking under S&W as well as Mossberg (Mossberg 1000).

I had read that Tan after I bought it. A rarity for me, I'd much rather do research before buying, rather than after. I was a little discouraged by less-than-steller reviews but happy to find that someone had made the leap to purchase remaining parts.
I couldn't find what made SW drop them however...
