will Savage Arms ever make a boomer?

They did make one for a short while, can't recall in which model. They still list 375 H&H on their website under the caliber search function, but no guns come up in the results.
 
they made a number of RUMs as well, so the action is long enough to handle the big stuff.


You could always re-barrel for a minimal cost - a savage pre-fit barrrel is about $400, and any gunsmith who wants more than about $50 to spin a prefit threaded and chambered barrel onto a Savage is a crook :)
 
they even made a 458 win with open sights and wood stock.

it was a 2+1 and i ve seen one in Africa but it was long time ago and no it wasnt a custom job ...
 
Savage has one of the biggest offerings right now, and they're constantly adding to their catalogue. Just this year they added one of their main lines, the 10fcns or 11fcns (I forget) in 7.62x39, which no one has done yet.

I think, and this is just my opinion, that Savage is spending their time chasing the markets that accept them. These seem to be the precision crowd, the younger hunters, and the budget shooters. People rag on Savage all the time for being crap, but it's mostly based on their products being cheaper. Price has almost no bearing on value when it comes to firearms simply because of: Surplus, legislation, gun lore, supply / demand, and so forth. People in the USA will pay more for an SKS than a new AR meanwhile up here an M1A costs 4-5x more than the m305 Norinco.

I think eventually Savage will offer something in a large bore hunting caliber, but it's not a safe bet. It just does not matter what you do, people will #####, especially if it involves caliber opinions. They're pretty much safe offering rifles in 30-06 and .308, as they're perfectly capable of dropping large game and no one will whine. Have you ever heard anyone complain about .30-06? So long as the market will gobble up everything you make, you may as well stick with what works.

They did make the .425 Express in the 116 for a few years, yes. The .425 Express was a Cameron Hopkins invention based on a .300 Win case. I belived it a .423" bullet (same as used by the .404 Jeff).

Who rags on Savage for being crap? There aren't many knowledgeable shooters that "rag on Savage for being crap". It's a given by most knowledgeable shooters that Savage makes amazingly good rifles for the $$, and have done so for a couple genersations already so it's not exactly news worthy.

The only complaints against the savage rifles is that the barrel nut isn't pretty enough for all tastes. The people who shoot like savage, the people who pose with their rifles aren't sure. Who you gonna listen to? ;)
 
I never used to like savage.. Until I shot a few of them... I found not only were they accurate... But they fit me better than other brands. Now I own 5 Savage Arms rifles.. And plan on at least 3 more.... And at the price of them... The wifey has no complaints.

Good rifle is a bit of a misnomer for Savage. Accuracy for little money may be a better term.
They are crude and poorly finished, probably the reason they don't offer big bores, the actions can't handle them. :D

Savage makes a good rifle, good being defined as accurate and reliable.

Some people look at rifles and some people shoot them. I tend to value the opinions of the latter, but ignore the petty BS of the former. Which are you? :p

There's several active board members here who base their entire opinion on how a rifle "looks". These would tend to be the members who have no real experience except with a keyboard and monitor. I tend not to put to much value in those opinions because let's face it, they don't know s**t. But I'm sure they feel good by contributing and any knowledgeable shooter just ignores the comments from the peanut munchers.

Savage makes a good rifle (good being defined as accurate and reliable). They aren't the best looking rifle in the world to some people.

Well I guess I fall into the latter category. All my rifles get used and none are there for appearance. All my bolt rifles have utilitarian synthetic stocks.
Of all the guns I've had, the failures are as follows:

-Winchester M70- action bolt crossthreaded from factory
-TC Encore- severe accuracy issues and hammer fails to strike firing pin
-Stevens 200- Extractor comes apart with spring and ball falling out
-Savage 110- Cross pin which holds firing pin/bolt head in place breaks in half

These are the only two Savage centerfire rifles I've owned and both have failed. I would therefore hardly classify them as reliable. Accurate and cheap has been my experience.

For a reliable, reasonably priced rifle in 40 cal., I would look no further than a Ruger Alaskan in 416 Ruger.
