Rifle Recommendation?

Here's what I am looking for:

.308 Winchester
Bolt Action
Relatively short/light
Open sights
Detachable magazine preferred
Reliable, well built, doesn't need a bunch of 'smithing to function.

That said, this would not be my main hunting rifle, but rather a knock-around gun for walking through the bush all day. As such, I am looking to spend as little as I need to to get the above list. I like fine wood, but this one can be plastic.

I like the look of the Tikka Battue, and maybe the Savage Scout model would be good. Is there anything else in the Savage line that comes with open sites?

Any suggestions appreciated, including if you think the list is too tight, and that I should get a BLR, for example.

Or the Ruger?

That Ruger Gunsite m77 looks good too, though I think for my purposes I'd want a smaller Mag for hunting. My thinking is that if I have missed nine times, I don't really deserve that tenth shot! Also, I think a shorter mag would get in the way less.
 
The Savage Edge/Axis maybe. very basic plastic stock, blued metal detachable mag (4 shots) inexpensive. My 223 shoots 1" or better, light and I don't really care if I scuff it up. The trigger is heavy, but by playing around with the spring I have lightened it up. Just an idea.
 
I have the Tikka Battue in 308 with synthetic stock and factory iron sights. I put a 1 X 4 scope on it but left the sights on. 20 inch barrel and quite light. It's an accurate gun and easy to carry.
 
If you are willing to let go of the open sight thing, I recommend a Tikka T3 Lite in .308. I have one and it is a nice hunting rifle.

As to price range, I'm pretty flexible - basically I want value, which I understand isn't always the cheapest price. On the other hand, I don't really need anything "fancy" and "average" performance will do. I have a scope and rings I can put on if need be, and would like to keep the rifle under $1000.

If the Stevens 200 will work, that's great. Savage's web-site did a good job convincing me that the Accu-Stock is a better design, and the accu-trigger makes sense to me too.

So currently my top three contenders are:

Savage Scout (accu-trigger accu stock)
Tikka Battue or Tikka T3 Lite (basically deciding whether the open sites are worth the extra cash)
Stevens 200 (Will I notice the stock and trigger differences? Are these guns inexpensive because they are cheaply made?)

The Ruger is a good choice, but if you have considered used, don't forget the Winchester Model 70 Lightweights from the 80s with 20" barrel and Rifle sights. Just an idea.
I saw one for sale on EE sans the irons and remembered I loved the look of those many years ago. I had the 22" BBl one without irons but the 20 inch model was sweet and I think there were only 5 3/4 lbs???:)
