Hey everyone. Good things sometimes come to an end but this could be fixable, at the right cost. At our cottage we are on a couple hundred acres of land and the owner has a driving range and also a skeet range on site. He just told me today that he would like us to start using steel shot for the clay range as it's on a natural spring which feeds his well and he is having some concern for the future. My question is is there any cheap steel loads that are reliably available an that won't break the bank? I bought 250 load boxes of lead at 55 a box but I know steel ain't that cheap. Any info would be great, maybe i will take reloading up as a hobby :)

kent cartridge is the only company I know of that is selling steel shot target ammo in canada.

Look up their website and get in touch with some one, I bought a flat at a DU auction.

I shot them at skeet and found them to be acceptable, I believe the shot size was #7 not 7.5 which I found odd.

relatively low recoil, and the wads are supposed to be photodegradable.

I've shot a bit of Sporting Clays at a very private facility where only all black targets and shells with fibre composition (no plastic wads or shotcups) wads are allowed.

The small inconvenience and increased cost of steel target loads only would to me, be a minor consideration, easily outweighed by being able to shoot weekends at the cottage.
Size 7 steel works just fine.

rules are rules and I have to abide by them, if you saw this property that I get to use the driving range, skeet shoot range, goose, deer, turkey hunt (to name a few) me spending a bit more to accommodate his request as I only skeet shoot like 5 times a year is a small expense, I am very privileged to use his property (a couple hundred acres including waterfront which our cottage is nestled on) Thanks for the info guys

I bought a case of winchester X-Pert Steel a couple of years ago in 1 oz. loads just to use for cripples while duck hunting. I know they keep them in stock so it shouldn't be too hard to get some if you just talk to a local Winchester dealer and they order you a few cases.

I tried the xpert steel before. Patterns a bit tighter then lead as expected, but with a cylinder choke it produce a wide open pattern for close range stuff like skeet. I usually run ic for clay when I'm not in the mood to change chokes around at each station.
