I'm thinking about picking up gun just for fun, to tinker with. I have a few buddies that own SKS, they love them and put different stocks etc on them. I prefer the original look of the gun. Just wondering which firearm you guys recommend? thanks.

Get both. If you're only going with one, probably the SKS - easier to maintain, cheaper to shoot, and your buddies are shooting the same thing.

Perspnally, I own three sks's. An sks-d, and two russians. One laminated, one regular.
I got the sks-d for FREE years ago. The guy was a hunter who bought it on a whim and decided he didn't want it. I took it off his hands and it sat in my gun cabinet for YEARS. It's minty and has a mirror bore. I guess I'm lucky to have my hands on her. I digress.

SKS's are everywhere. SVT-40's are less common. The sks is currently cheaper to shoot.

If you want to tinker with a rifle - pick the sks. They are more abundant and don't have the significant war history that the svt-40 does.

If you want a rifle with more potential for a value increase - grab an svt-40.

By the sounds of it, you might enjoy the sks more! They are fun plinkers. Grab one and a few crates of ammo and have at er'

Actually when set up proprely ( gaz setting ) the SVT is a lot of fun to shoot kick only a bit more than a SKS and is a lot more accurate for fun factor and value i choose the SVT-40... I own 3 russians SKS and one finnish and one russian SVT... JP.

Another vote for the SVT-40. I've had Chinese and Russian SKS's.

If you can, buy up any magazines for the rifle you can find. They are rare as hell and hard to come by.

Has far more stopping power then the SKS and recoil is not much of an issue.

Ammo cheap from Budget Shooter Supply. :)

Once ya get the gas block set for the ammo you are shooting, it goes all day without a hiccup.

Cannot wait to get a scope mount for the rifle so I can mount modern optics to it.

Get both! SKS is cheap, built to last, easy to clean, ammo is cheap and plentiful. Personally, i have a soft spot for the SVT,i have 8 sks's and 3 svt. The SVT40 is very accurate, light with low recoil, the muzzle brake is very loud so ear muff is a must. The svt take a little bit more time to clean than a sks but once you know the rifle, field stripping is straight foward. Surplus ammo is available for the svt but not plentiful like the 7.62x39.

To the OP:

You want to tinker with your rifle, get the SKS. They're cheap enough that if you screw one up, you can have a parts rifle to fix it with:D!!

Ammo is AFAIK a helluva lot cheaper than SVT ammo.

Magazines (should you wish to replace the non-detachable mag with a detachable) are readily available, unlike the mags for the SVT.

I believe the SVT is more accurate with surplus ammo, but both rifles are acceptable accuracy-wise with commercial ammo. The SVT does shoot a harder-hitting, longer-range round and so IMHO would be better for hunting than the SKS.

Ever try buying 7.62x54R or reload for a SVT?
Not just anywhere caries the ammo and you SVT will toss your brass where you will slowly loose it all not to mention dent/corigate the cases. That makes reloading a bit tougher/expensive.

7.62x39 and 7.62x54r is approx the same price at SFRC, for the MFS, non-corrosive. I will not buy corrosive ammo. I know people want to save $, but I don't shoot that much, so the clean ammo is better for me. I love my SKS and when I get my SVT cleaned up, I will let you know which one to buy. I say BUY BOTH, because they are cool rifles. How about all 3 Russian Non-restricted...

SVT-40 and a Mosin because they shoot the same round. Good package deals for Mosin and ammo at Westrifle. You can get surplus ammo, or MFS in soft point or fmj. The Mosin by itself is 110 bucks, how much better can it get? I've gone hunting with both rifles. I love them.

We also have LVE ammunition.
New in Canada. Very good quality and accurate.
It is non corrosive and brass wash.
Try it and you will be happy. It is used by military and police in Russia and all around the world.
It is not lacquered and does not leave residue in the barrel.
Contact me for more info dealers welcome.

I have 3 SKS's (2 Russkies and 1 Chicom) and a sweet 1940 Izzy SVT that is one of the favorites in my collection. The SKS's are cheaper to shoot, and everyone has one. I think they will be around for a long time, whereas the SVT was not made in the same numbers, and one day the supply will dwindle. From a collector's standpoint, I'd go with the SVT...plus the expressions on people's faces at the range when you shoot it are priceless-that thing is LOUD:D

Buy 3 of those and save on shipping.
