Which caliber would you choose for a new Winchester Model 70 featherweight and why?

Is the barrel any thicker/stiffer on the .270 owing to its smaller caliber?

If both were available, I'd choose the .30/06, only because its my favorite cartridge, not because the .270 is lacking. I doubt there is much to choose between the two in terms stiffness or weight with any given barrel contour, at least not to the extent that one would have a practical advantage over the other.

In a lightweight rifle, I would choose between a 308 and 7-08. In a long action the featherweight isn't.

In real life the difference is a couple ounces. You couldn't tell the difference between a short action and a long action if you were blindfolded and got to hold each of them to judge by weight alone. Really.

I voted .270 Win.

But everyone knows the Win 70 F/W to get/have is one in the venerable 6.5x55mm.... ;) :p

NAA.

I've had one Winchester model 70 FWT and it was chambered in 7x57 Mauser and I still regret parting with it. However, of "the two poll choices listed", either would be a good choice but I would lean ever so slightly in favour of the '06.

Of the choices, I selected the 270. It should come down to what you are going to use it for. I would also have a look at the 308 and 7mm08 if you are looking at a Featherweight.
They only show a difference of 1/4 lb. but being a shorter cartridge you have about 1/2" more of usable bbl. length.

1/4 lb difference, according to Winchester. By going to the featherweight compact in 7mm-08 or .308, you're 1/2 lb. lighter than the L/A non-compact featherweights.

Iether one depending on what you want it for, I like the .270 as it can be used almost anywhere in Ontario . Both are great calabers but my chioce is the Featherwieght in .270.

I need to buy one some day......LOL! This Sako bug has got me..
