New calibre question

Conventional lead bullets won't do much good against armoured robots. Better start stockpiling SMAWs and Javelins.

I've toyed around with the thought of fully robotic warfare (no humans put in harms way). It sort of takes a lot of the horror out of war. I mean, it might as well be a sporting event after...

Sadly, if you aren't killing your enemies there seems to be no point in fighting wars. Crowded as the world is, killing is unlikely to stop now. :(

OTOH, robot battles as sporting events (to quote you) ...

YEAHHHHHH!!!

Hahaha, this is such a bear defense thread !!!!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I agree .223 is useless for anything but non-tactical paper targets. Most of the time I won't trust anything but my horde of laser equipped squirrels. But should something penetrate my 1657 meter no go zone I can quickly opt for my .308 RFB with a 9x zoom ,10x is for pussies, and drop man sized targets travelling at diagonal serpentine patterns opposing the wind provided I do my part.

awe come on guys if your gonna have fun get a .577 t-rex if you can get your hands on one nothing will stand up to that....lol but always fun with .223

I suppose I could get angry at being dissed but some of these answers are way too funny and I'm enjoying them as much as everyone else. I really should add "Evil Vampiric Brick Walls" to my original post. :p

Just for the record, has anyone here shot at least two of 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, and 300 BLK or 300 Whisper? d:h:

I've fired the Whisper (and since it's pretty much a twin of the BLK I guess we'll include the also), as well as aa 6.8 (from a Mini-14). The 6.8 showed better accuracy than any Mini-14 I'd seen before, possibly due to the fact that it was a newer rifle and was wearing a decent optic (Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x). I thought that it would make for a fine deer rifle.

The 300 Whisper was from a Mk18 clone and was suppressed (Gemtech can, not sure of the model), and was one of the coolest things I've ever fired - almost totally silent!!! If someone asked whether I'd prefer to have full auto of suppressors the answer would be a no-brainer.

Sorry if that's pretty nebulous but I'd kind of have to shoot them side by side to give a more focused and objective opinion. Bottom line - I'm pretty sure my next AR upper is going to be a 300 BLK...

wouldn't some sort of focused emp weapon reduce any robots into piles of smoldering scrap metal ?
There is EMP shielding technology, and it's already on military tech. They'd probably take it to the next level for robotics with highly sensitive electronics.

Of course, you could always just nuke them. The EMP put out by a nuke will probably overwhelm any sort of shielding tech.

I have several handguns and I'm now just starting to daydream about quasi-military rifles like the NEA and RFB. From what I have seen, .223 appears to be underpowered and on its way out. (I remember the same complaints from soldiers in Vietnam in the 60s!) If .308 is considered too powerful (I welcome opinions on that, too) that leaves a couple of 6.5s, 6.8 SPC, and the new 300 BLK (or the old 300 Whisper).

My gut instinct tells me to go with the 6.8 SPC. Does anyone have enough experience with, say, 6.8 and 300 BLK/Whisper to make a recommendation? Which is more suitable for Zombie hunting season?

FWIW the only military calibre I have fired is .303. Loved the gun, found the recoil manageable but near my tolerance limit. Expect that would improve with practice.

Sorry if this has been done to death :HR: but I haven't seen any threads on it.

TIA

The US is broke, and won't be making any big battle rifle caliber changes anytime soon. The is no objective reason for any non competing range shooter to use anything but cheap, plentiful .223 for their shooting pleasure.
Also, the .308/7.62 NATO is available and in use in many military rifles already. The improvements offered by inbetween cartridges are small and very expensive considering the small benefits. The problem of ineffective infantry persons would be far better solved by more focused training than ###y toys. How many of you can shoot inside 3 MOA from a standing position at 100M? If not, you may be better off buying an M305 and 2k rnds of ammo, than a custom tack driver with a $1500 optic. Not that spending your money as you see fit is wrong, just don't try to pretend that ###y toys make the person.

5.56 will not be out for awhile.

It is easier to talk aobut replacing 5.56 with 6.8SPC and other 30 cal purely form the terminal ballistic perspective - but for the big army, a flat shooting catridge like 5.56 means longer effective range for everyone with the given amount of training. Target identification and ranging are already difficult, giving people a catridge that drops more will complicate the firing process even more. let people who have more training to exploit the advantage of these specialty catridge, but 5.56 is a pretty good deal for everyone.

And those who think 5.56 is underpowered, I invite you to stand at 500m and let us shoot at you, so you can report first handedly how much it hurts.

It may be in trials but that is it.

Kind of like Thailand adopting the Tavor and Sigs.

Or Canada adopting the FN P90.

Does the US have semi and bolt rifles in 6.5x47? Hell yeah. Are they operational hell no. Will they ever be? Hell no.
