Just picked up my latest project today. It's a .300 AAC Blackout built on a Remington 700 action that started life at a .17 Rem Fireball. It wears a 16" Shilen Match Grade 1/8" twist barrel that has a heavy varmint contour. I had the barrelled action trued/accurized and bedded in a HS Precision LTR stock with the barrel channel opened slightly to accomodate the new Shilen. I had my gunsmith install one of his own tactical bolt handles.

Up top, I mounted a Falcon Menace 1.5x5 30mm scope in a set of medium IOR steel rings to a EGW 20 MOA base. If the rings look WAY too high, then you'd be absolutely right. I just used these rings in a pinch to see how everything would look. A set of low rings would be a better choice and I plan to order them soon.

My intention is to shoot primarily subsonic ammuniton using .30 cal bullets ranging from 200-240 grains. I ordered a .30 cal (4) cavity mould that will make 247 gr. cast lead bullets in .311" diameter as cast. I hope the rifle likes the accuracy potential of these bullets.Where the intention is to shoot subsonic I plan on using simple wheel weights while casting.

Once I get everything the way I like it I'll break out the paint and give in a new look. Here's a few pics of what it looks like now.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Gorky: I plan on shooting paper for the time being. Not sure of the weight but it balances quite nicely. I think I stuck with a standard Remington varmint contour instead of the heavy varmint. In any event, I look forward to shooting the Hell out of it.

Matty: So, so, true. If supressors were permitted here I'd have bought one or more long ago.

Paulinski: I don't have any brass yet. I plan on buying some .221 FB brass and necking it up to get me started. If/when Remington gets their sheet together and Gravel's can arrange for import, I'll buy the factory Remington brass.

so is there a company a guy can just buy something similar to this? and wut would be even cooler is if u could shoot 7.62x39 with it as well, now that would be awesome

300 Whisper is a better cartridge for these applications than 7.62x39. The Russian case is just a bit too big to be really good with subsonics.

Nice! I am working on a similar project. Just gotta find a donor action now. Mine is gonna be a bit different because I have access to the prohibited stuff. :)

This is more what I am going for. It will have a 20-22" integral monocore suppressor over top of a 14" barrel and will go. "Tink ....................thud"

Mattboy72:I considered 7.62x39mm as well. In fact, it was a real toss up for me. However, when I started buying items for this project, there were precious few bolt guns chambered for it. Now, I see Savage has (2) rifles with the chambering and more may be on the way...Figures! When I weighed all the pros/cons of it all, I came to the conclusion that the .300 Blackout was the way I'd go.

A real cheap option for 7.62x39mm is a single shot break action Baikal rifle. You can get them for around $200. That's a rifle I wouldn't mind shooting corrosive surplus ammo through while still having the flexibility to try some reduced charge handloads. If you totally pooch the rifle because you didn't clean it properly, who cares? It's ugly as sin to begin with and I personally wouldn't get worked up over a $200 rifle getting rusted because I messed up.

Suputin: I like your project idea a lot better than mine. lol If supressors were legal in Canada, I'd have kept the barrel length to no more than 12" and I would bought a 9mm pistol can to use on a number of firearms that I own. Of course, I'd have to limit myself to shooting subsonic ammunition but that's no big deal to me as I handload everything except for rimfire.

Looking back on my decision to build this rifle, I did make one choice that I have some regret. I wish I'd kept the barrel contour no heavier than a standard Remington varmint barrel. It would have made the whole package lighter, though I don't have any major complaints about the weight or balance as it is now.

Ruger recently has come out with a .357/77 bolt action rifle that I am very interested in. The ability to shoot subsonic .38 Specials to full power .357 Magnum loads has a great deal of appeal to me. It's a cartridge many of us already load for so it makes a lot of sense logistically speaking.

For anyone looking to supress an off the shelf rifle while maintaining versatility by owning just (1) supressor, this would be an ideal rifle as far as I'm concerned.

You build for others as well, or strictly yourself?
I have been sitting on an action to do a similar build now for 2 years (waiting to use up the 223 I have for that rifle. The plan was a bolt action with detachable mag that can use AR mags, a 14inch barrel, and try to lay my hands on a case of the remmy 300AAC stuff.

I am thinking of doing a 300 AAC Blackout build using a .223 Savage DBM (same mags and boltface) in the future but first off I am still gathering parts for a .308 build.

I still dream of having an AR-15 upper built in .300 Blackout. Maybe one day the AR-15 won't be restricted and I can use it for hunting....

well couldnt u modify an r15 to take the cartridge? and thanks for the info guys

This cartridge is far more popular in AR platforms than any other. In fact, Canada's own North Eastern Arms is planning to offer their own AR's chambered for it.

I built a bolt because I didn't want the hassle of yet another restricted firearm. Besides, I have (3) AR's now that I haven't shot for almost 10 years and I wasn't interested in adding another.

It is just a barrel swap. Easy peasy!

The biggest problem you are going to have is the bottom metal to fit an AR mag to a Rem 700 or Sav or whatever action you have.

The factory ammo may be a while coming to Canada but it is easy to reload for.
